OCTOBER 11, 1971: THE BLOODY END OF "NARDONG PUTIK"

Bloody end for "Putik"
Joint PC-NBI-Imus police force kills long wanted man in Cavite

The Mania Times/ October 11, 1971

Leonardo Manecio, alias Nardong Putik, 47, considererd by the PC as Cavite Public Enemy No. 1 with a php20,000 price on his head, was killed by a joint PC-NBI-Imus police force at 7:40 a.m. yesterday between Panamitan and Talon, Kawit,
Cavite.

Alone in Car

Manecio was alone in his red Impala car (Chevrolet) with plate No. 81-31 Cavite ’71 when fired upon by some 20 NBI agents, several PC soldiers and policemen. He was armed with a .38 cal. Magnum revolver.

Lt. Col. Miguel Gantuangco, Cavite PC commander, and NBI Director Jolly Bugarin, said Manecio did not heed the signal given by NBI agents for him to stop his car, prompting the agents to fire at him.

NBI sources said Manecio was alone in his car but there were some 10 persons, believed to be his companions aboard a passenger jeepney which sped away before Manecio was cornered by the operatives.

Manecio’s face and arms were mutilated almost beyond recognition.

Gantuangco said all efforts and negotiations made to persuade Manecio to give up peacefully had failed. “I even sought the assistance of Bishop Vicedo of Caloocan who was respected so much by Nardong Putik,” Gantuangco said. “But Manecio was so stubborn, and he told us, through his emissary, that he would not give up,” Gantuangco added.

72-hour drive

Bugarin said the killing of Manecio was the result of 72-hour operation. For the past 72 hours prior to Manecio’s slaying, PC and NBI agents had been tailing the elusive bandit chieftain. Last Saturday night, Manecio’s hideout in Noveleta was pinpointed. A plan was mapped out at 3 a.m. yesterday to capture him. At 4 a.m., troopers from the 233rd PC Company led by Capt. Manuel Bruan posted themselves in ambush position along the possible routes to be taken by Manecio in going to Alapan, Imus.

Guarded exits

As planned, the first group of PC men placed themselves along Panamitan (Kawit), followed by another group of NBI agents, then another group of PC men, with the Imus policemen guarding the Kawit-Imus boundary. When Manecio’s car passed by Panamitan, a signal was given to the NBI agents who were then already on the alert. They signaled Manecio to stop but he ignored them and they opened fire.

Towed to Manila

Manecio’s car, with his bullet-riddled body, was towed by a PC armored car to the NBI headquarters in Manila for autopsy and identification. The body was positively identified as Manecio’s. It was later transferred to the NBI morgue.

Taken from his body were the following items: Six php50 bills; one $100 and two $50 bills believed to be fake; one booklet containing a list of those who owed him money; one black wallet; one registration paper of a Willys jeep in the name of Nancy Tubig of 130 Banawe, Quezon City; one picture of two women; one calling card of “Lt. Felipe Pablo, In-charge Colorum Traffic---MPD”; one piece of paper with a note indicating plate No. 57-79 Pasay City; one piece of paper with a note: “4 na kalabaw” (4 carabaos); one piece of paper containing the name of “Felipe Gomez of Tagaytay City for Mayor”; one calling card with the name “Engr. Jaime T. Bravo;” one air-mail enevelope addressed to Mrs. Clarita G. Amana f Alapan, Imus, Cavite.

Mixed reactions

Word from Cavite said last night residents reacted with mixed reactions to Manecio’s killing. Over the months since he resumed operations after escaping from Muntinlupa, Manecio had built a reputation as a local “Robin Hood” marked by hostility against the rich. Some municipal officials and several prominent citizens of Cavite have openly expressed to high PC officials sympathy for Manecio who they credited with having practically eradicated cattle-rustling, robbery, and rape in their areas.

Manecio’s career

Manecio’s career started in the early 1950s when he participated in the Maragondon massacre where the mayor, police chief, and several policemen were killed with hunting knives. He was jailed as one of the suspects. Manecio escaped. Then his group encountered the group of Lt. Col. Laureano Marana, then Cavite PC commander. Marana and his men were killed on Election Day of 1957. Because of that incident, the biggest military operations in Cavite’s history was launched against Manecio resulting in his wounding and capture in Binakayan, Kawit, on May 22, 1958.

After several years of detention at the Camp Crame stockade, he was sentenced to a total of 182 years and two months for the killing of Colonel Marana and his men. He was transferred to the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa, Rizal, where he escaped on October 31, 1969.

Manecio became Cavite’s Public Enemy No. 1 again as he was able to organize a gang armed with modern weapons, including Armalites and AK-47s. His group engaged in carnapping, cattle rustling, planting and distribution of marijuana, smuggling, and other rackets, according to PC authorities.

Ramon Revilla, Sr. made two versions of Nardong Putik, the first one in 1972, his comeback movie and in 1984. Both were certified hits during its theater runs.

Nardong Putik (1972)- Stars Ramon Revilla, Sr., Gloria Romero, Alona Alegre, Rosemarie Gil, Robert Jaworski, Michael Murray, Manolo Robles and Max Alvarado/ Directed by Tony Cayado

I will post this update on this blog:

""
My grandpa was the one who took the body of his cousin Nardo from the NBI.

According to him, the shooting was staged so that the NBI and the police could take the credit. They posed Nardo's dead body in the driver's seat and then they shot him.

There was the legend that Nardo couldn't be harmed by a bullet due to his "agimat." So, the authorities searched for a traitor among Nardo's friends. That previous night, Nardo was treacherously clubbed to death in the toilet of Josephine's restaurant in Kawit -- attacked from behind while he was taking a piss by the traitor drinking buddy.

Payback for that traitor came about a month later. He was shot dead in Zapote in broad daylight by Nardo's loyal friends and relatives.

Other tidbits:
1. Why he was called "Putik."
According to my grandpa, the Philippine Constabulary cornered him in the marshes near Long Beach outside Cavite City. Then he disappeared, despite hours of searching. Thus, the legend began that he could transform himself into mud or "putik' -- that's why he was able to elude capture. The truth, he laughingly told my grandpa, was that he just used a strand of 'dayami' and used it so that he could breathe while submerged in the muddy waters.

2. His brother was also a feared man.
"Pidyong Putik" was a character in the Cavite City night life district - the area outside the gates of the Sangley Point Naval base.
My mother worked as a server at the Chinese "Asiong's" restaurant, and being a migrant to Cavite City from Imus, some local thugs were trying to harass her. Pidyo came to check up on her one day, and after that, the thugs apologized to her and left her alone. Even Asiong became nicer to her. :-)
Pidyo didn't die a violent death, but succumbed to cancer.

1969, i was nine years old and the following are some of my recollections about nardong putik. as i recall, i saw him quite a few times with his armed men playing billiards at my neighbour’s store; walking at my grandpa’s ricefield in group just like an ordinary person; driving his motorcycle; and driving his jeep with a word “kilabot” in the back. i couldn’t forget an incident one afternoon when we heard a gunfight while putik and his men were chasing thugs. there’s also an incident when the philippine constabulary raided his house in sabang (dasmarinas) but found no putik at all. the last time i saw him was when my uncle brought me to nardo’s burial, viewed him with a stitched face as a result of what the authorities had done. and as what dennis said, i am from cavite as well, and as what local people thought putik was not ambushed. to make the story short, we knew he was bludgeoned with the help of a traitor at josephine’s restaurant in noveleta, put in to his car then placed to panamitan road in kawit. while lying dead in the driver’s seat, authorities fired at him and make people believe he was ambushed. like the poisoning of the then dasmarinas town mayor, and putik’s best buddy narciso guevarra, it was the same person who was behind putik’s killing. this person was fearful of these two brave men from dasmarinas that he and his private army couldn’t even try to have a gunfight at, so he has to find another way of killing them. it’s just when i grew up i realized everything and fascinated about this brave man nardong putik, the once famous “robin hood” and “kilabot” of cavite.

The real story on "Nardong Putik" was that he was ambushed in his car by NBI agents as stated by my late Uncle who was one of the NBI agents that gunned him down in Cavite. Leonardo Manecio had left a message of survival in a muddy rain, that's why he was called Nardong Putik. It's something that you don't want to try in the old days.

i just watched "Nardong Putik" of Ramon Revilla Sr. I don't know if it's the 1972 movie or 1984. the movie ended with a lesson, "One who lives in a violent life, ends with a violent death."

to dennis of cavite,
your story is very accurate which means nardo was actually murdered. i hope one day someone will write a book about this and finally reveal the truth.

Capturing Nardong Putik
As a fugitive, Putik and his men continued to instill terror in Cavite. Among the cases he was involved in were the illegal cultivation of marijuana and money extortion activities. On February 10, 1971, the National Bureau of Investigation's Narcotics division surveyed a marijuana plantation in Imus, Cavite allegedly being protected by Putik. Two NBI Agents, Rogelio Domingo and Antonio Dayao were captured, tortured, and killed by Nardong Putik and his men. The incident sealed Putik's fate: Angered by the heinous crime, NBI Director Jolly Bugarin ordered all his Agents to capture dead or alive Nardo and all responsible for the death of Agents Domingo and Dayao. NBI Agent Epimaco "Eppy" Velasco was then installed as the new Chief of the NBI Narcotics Division. In a month's time, they were able to record the movements of Nardong Putik. Later, with enough data, they were able to track his full whereabouts confidently to enable them to launch the operation to capture him on October 10, 1971. The operation which was a joint NBI-PC-Imus police force was composed of some 20 men. Troopers from the 233rd PC Company were led by Capt. Manuel Bruan. At 5:00 in the morning, the light of the house of the mistress of Nardo went out. After a few minutes, Nardo drives his Chevrolet Impala car out to the main Manila-Cavite highway. For unknown reasons, or maybe Nardong Putik senses that he is being tailed by the Philippine Constabulary, he was able to escape the PC dragnet or checkpoint at Panamitan and Talon, Kawit, Cavite. However, Nardong Putik did not notice a Volkswagen Kombi tailing him in the highway at the same time. The Kombi contained NBI Agents Velasco, Nasol, Utico, Bautista and others. They chased Nardo's car, and at Noveleta, Cavite, they were able to overtake the Impala and was at the right side of the car. Velasco shouted "NARDO!". He sensed the danger and immediately reached for his .45 pistol. At that moment, the NBI Agents opened fire with their revolvers, carbines, and submachine guns, peppering the car, and causing Nardo's instant death. The car lurched to the side of the highway and stopped. The Agents then immediately jumped out of their vehicle and took cover. Some Agents were still firing their guns to make sure that Nardo will not retaliate. The Impala was later hauled into NBI Headquarters in Manila, with the dead Putik inside, in full view of Director Bugarin. The news became a flash report on local television, and a top newspaper story the next day. That mission cemented the fame of Agent Velasco, who later became NBI Director in the nineties.

hi guys, i know lolo nardo may have done many things that are against the law, para skn meron sigurong mas malalim na reason kaya siya naligaw ng landas, kasi nung mga time na yun madaming abusadong tao, hindi ako naniniwalang drug pusher siya, dinagdag lang yun para mas kamuhian siya ng mga tao dati. by the way panganay na apo nga pala ako ni (pidyong putik) or should i say lolo pidyo na kapatid ni putik, lagi akong namamangha everytime na nagkkwento ang lola ko at other relatives tungkol kay lolo nardo, kinikwento nila na nung bata pa daw ang tatay ko eh pumupunta daw siya sa hideout ni putik para dalhan sila ng pagkain, nkkaamaze ang buhay ni putik madami pa tyung hindi alam tungkol skanya, but i know in my heart he is a good man, proud to be a MANICIO..
