THE SIXTIES # 229: PUGO & BENTOT, SYLVIA LA TORRE, ROSA AGUIRRE, CRIS DE VERA AND LERO SALVADOR IN "TANG-TARANG-TANG"/ RADIO SERIAL AND MOVIE ADAPTATION (1961-62)/ Re-posted

Do you still remember the top-rating weekly TV show in the mid-60s, Tang-Tarang-Tang? This was one of my favorite show during my childhood days and I still recalled somewhat vaguely the opening song which run something like this ... Ako si Don Mariano, Ibyang po naman ako, Bitoy ang pangalan ko, Badong naman ako... In the cast were big names in movies, TV and radio --- Pugo as Don Mariano, Bentot as the overgrown child Bitoy, Leroy Salvador as Badong and Sylvia La Torre as Ibyang and Rosa Aguirre as Aling Rosa. Sylvia was later replaced by Marita Zobel, and in the 70s by Jean Saburit. The show, created and conceptualized by Virgilio 'Beer' Flores, was being handled and directed by talented director Ading Fernando.

The show started as a radio program in DZRH in 1961. It featured the voices of Pugo, Bentot, Sylvia La Torre and Rosa Aguirre. It was later adapted into the silver screen in 1962.

THE SIXTIES # 125: COMEDY LEGENDS PUGO AND BENTOT, SYLVIA LA TORRE, EDDIE SAN JOSE, ROSA AGUIRRE IN "OH SENDANG" (1961): AN ENTERTAINING FUN MOVIE!/ Re-posted

"Oh Sendang" (1961)
LVN Pictures, Inc.
Release Date May 29, 1961/ Dalisay
Story and Screenplay "Beer" Flores
Music F. Buencamino, Jr.
Direction Fred Daluz
Cast Pugo and Bentot, Sylvia La Torre, Eddie San Jose, Rosa Aguirrre, Ric Tierro, Dely Magpayo/ with Willie Sotelo, Liza Moreno and Jose Vergara

Oh Sendang, released in 1961, was one of the two known surviving movies of the well-loved and laughable comic tandem of Pugo and Bentot. The other one was Nukso nang Nukso (1960). The movie, one of the many spin-offs of the highly popular radio program, Sebya Mahal Kita, was one of the many sequels they did under LVN Pictures. It tells of the wacky escapades of the scheming Mang Mariano ‘Nano’ Batecabeza (played by Pugo) and his overgrown son, Bitoy (Bentot). The movie dwells on situation comedy rather than the typical slapstick and toilet humor. Here are the two-part film clips where writer “Beer” Flores used the plot’s twists and turns to make the audience laugh.

I used to watch Pugo and Bentot in a highly rated and popular TV comedy show, “Tang Tarang Tang.” That was in the 60s. I savor the many funny and hilarious situations that two went through.

Just the other day, I was able to watch a 1959 classic comedy, Nukso Nang Nukso, probably the only surviving Pugo-Bentot movie wherein the two are the lead stars. It was based on a popular radio program, Sebya, Mahal Kita from a story created by 'Beer' Flores. Here, Pugo is
Mang Nano Batekabesa, the scheming but lovable trickster who always devises crazy plans on how to make easy money so as to finance his little vices like jueteng and cockfighting. Bentot is Bitoy, his overgrown child who unwittingly divulged their plans, usually getting his father into all sorts of trouble. Also in the cast are Rosa Aguirre as Aling Rosa, Sylvia La Torre as Sebya, Mang Nano's daughter and Eddie San Jose is Aling Rosa's son Eddie Biscocho, married to Sebya.

Photo shows Mang Nano (Pugo) tries to pull off one of his many 'wicked' plans on his dim-witted son-in-law, Eddie (Eddie San Jose) while Bitoy (Bentot) innocently looks on.

Here’s the opening scene of this classic comedy, a vintage “Pugo” and “Bentot."
