36th GAWAD URIAN WINNERS (2013): NORA AUNOR, JERICHO ROSALES, ADOLF ALIX,JR. LEAD 36th GAWAD URIAN AWARDS

June 18--- The best films of 2012 were honored at the 36th Gawad Urian Awards held at NBC Tent in Taguig City.

MANILA, Philippines—True to its tradition of awarding maverick indie productions, “Ang Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim” by Davao-based director-screenwriter Arnel Mardoquio was awarded “Best Film” in the 36th Gawad Urian Awards held Tuesday night at the NBC Tent in Taguig City.
Mardoquio though failed to bring home the best director trophy.

Much-awarded indie director Adolfo Alix Jr. was awarded best director for his work, “Mater Dolorosa.”

“This is for my Mom who always supported me and allowed me to nurture my love for cinema,” said Alix in his recent status on Facebook.

Nora Aunor, as expected, won the best actress trophy for Brillante Mendoza’s “Thy Womb.” Mendoza on the other hand won best production design for the same film.

The best actor went to Jericho Rosales for his work in “Alagwa,” a film by writer-director Ian Lorenons on human trafficking.

Best Documentary award, to the delight of many, went to the enigmatic “Harana” by Benito Bautista. “Harana” tackles the nearly lost Filipino tradition of serenading ones’ love at night.
Gawad Urian is given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), a group of film critics and academicians.

Its active members for the past couple of years are Rolando B. Tolentino, Grace Javier Alfonso, Butch Francisco, Mario A. Hernando, Bienvenido Lumbera, Miguel Q. Rapatan, Benilda S. Santos, Dr. Nicanor G. Tiongson, Tito Genova Valiente and Lito B. Zulueta.

The awarding was hosted by Richard Gomez, Xian Lim, Cherie Gil, Butch Francisco and Iza Calzado.

THE 2012 METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS NIGHT: "ONE MORE TRY" BEST PICTURE; NORA AUNOR, BEST ACTRESS; DINGDONG DANTES, BEST ACTOR

“One More Try” was named Best Picture during the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival Awards night held at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas, Pasig City on Thursday, December 27. The movie won a total of six awards, including the inaugural Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence and the Best Actor trophy for Dingdong Dantes.

Nora Aunor won the Best Actress for her role in “Thy Womb.”

“Thy Womb,” meanwhile, was also awarded the Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Cultural Award and the Best Director award for Brilliante Mendoza. Mendoza urged moviegoers to support his film, which stars Nora Aunor and Bembol Roco.

“Showing pa po kami. Sana po makatulong yung award. At sana wag po kayong mag-pull out,” he said during his award acceptance speech.

His statement comes after it was reported that several cinemas were already pulling out the film from their line-up due to its poor box office performance. As of the latest report, “Thy Womb” is in last place in terms of box office results among the eight MMFF entries this year.

Cesar Montano won as Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film “El Presidente” and the Best Supporting Actress went to Wilma Doesnt of “Sisterakas.”

The glittering rites was hosted by Kris Aquino and KC Concepcion.

BRILLANTE MENDOZA WINS BIG AT CANNES

Cannes--- Brillante Mendoza of the Philippines on Sunday picked up the best director prize at the Cannes film festival for his dark movie "Kinatay". "Kinatay" (Butchered) tells of corrupt cops hacking a prostitute to pieces with blunt kitchen knives. Mendoza, at Cannes for the second year running, again split the critics, drawing both hisses and applause for "Kinatay". Last year's "Serbis" was set in a Manila porn-theatre with long close-ups of festering boils and overflowing toilets, as well as the poverty and distress on the streets.

Still determined to portray the social reality around him, Mendoza in "Kinatay" traces 24 hours in the day of a trainee policeman, happily beginning with his wedding in the morning to close with the young man's first outing at night with a band of corrupt colleagues. To his surprise, fear and anguish, they pick up a prostitute accused of betrayal and wind up torturing, raping, killing and hacking her before disposing of the body parts across Manila. " This is not just entertainment, these kinds of stories are real," Mendoza said at Cannes. Last year was the first time since 1984 the Philippines had a film competing for the top prize at Cannes, the Palme d'Or. (Agence France-Presse/ May 25, 2009)

I’d like to share this award with my daughter, Angelica, who has always been my number one critic and to an actor I really respect, Coco Martin. Thank you all for embracing my kind of cinema."

Last year, Mendoza made the country proud because his film “Serbis” (Service) was selected as one of the finalists competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The first and only time a Filipino director had a film including in the competition category of the Cannes Filmfest was in 1984, when Lino Brocka's opus “Orapronobis” was accepted.

All of them live in the depressed slum area of Quiapo, Manila. The film takes place during Holy Week amidst the 2007 elections. It represents Manila as swarming with criminals -- snatchers, pickpockets, drug pushers, shoplifters and the like.
