THE WAR YEARS (1942- 1945): LEOPOLDO SALCEDO, ESTER MAGALONA, CARLOS PADILLA, DEANA PRIETO, ROLANDO LIWANAG, MARY WALTER, TEDDY ALIERMO, LILIAN LEONARDO, CECILIO JOAQUIN, EDDIE INFANTE, MANUEL ELORIAGA, JUAN RODRIGUEZ, RAMONA PALMA, RAMON ROY, JOSE LUZ BERNARDO, NITA CARMONA, NARDO ZAMORA, JOSE MAXIMO IN "PRINCIPE TEÑOSO" (1942)

In a videotaped interview, Manuel Conde recounted the problems of shooting "Principe Teñoso." There was a scarcity of film stock as the local Kodak store had been looted by the rig-drivers of Binondo. However, they were able to salvage a few rolls from the stables. There was also severe film censorship. The Japanese demanded that every form of entertainment--- movies as well as stage plays and vaudeville---carried some form of Japanese propaganda. Conde’s problem was that there were no Japanese during the time of Principe Teñoso. How could you inject propaganda in a 19th century setting? He finally solved it by stamping the glass of milk the princess was drinking with a trademark: Made in Japan.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ANGEL ESMERALDA, YOLANDA MARQUEZ, ARMANDO CRIS, MARY WALTER, GREGORIO TICMAN, EXEQUIEL SEGOVIA, GERARDO DE LEON IN "ANG PAGBABALIK" (1938)

"He sink to the bottomless pit of despair only to rise again to a glory and happiness greater than any he had ever known," says the ad in this 1938 movie, "Ang Pagbabalik."

The movie starred Angel Esmeralda, Yolanda Marquez, Armando Cris, Mary Walter, Gregorio Ticman, Exequiel Segovia, Gerardo de Leon, under the direction of Carlos Padilla.

It was released and shown at Grand Theater, March 1, 1938.

Synopsis: Carmelo Pena, featherweight champion of the Orient, during his fight with "Kid Rainbow, “sees his wife winking at his opponent, during one of the intermission.

Flared by jealousy, Carmelo loses the fight, and eventually, his title. Conchita, his wife, a woman who is attracted by the new champion, decides to leave Carmelo and live with the new featherweight champion, "Kid Rainbow.''

Distraught and betrayed, Carmelo abandons the sport, his glory soon forgotten, and wanders aimlessly with a broken spirit.
One day, a devoted fan named Donaldo encounters him and, believing Carmelo still has greatness within him, brings him to his hacienda for strict training. There, Carmelo meets Rosita, Donaldo’s sister, and quietly falls in love with her. Bound by his supposed marriage to Conchita, he suppresses his feelings, though Donaldo, sensing his affection, investigates. Donaldo discovers that Conchita had previously married another man, making her union with Carmelo invalid. Keeping this to himself, he continues preparing Carmelo for a comeback.

Driven by gratitude to Donaldo and admiration for Rosita, Carmelo returns to the ring, regains his title, and learns that Conchita has died. Overjoyed, he declares his love to Rosita, who admits she has loved him since their first meeting. Their wedding is quickly arranged—but during the ceremony, Conchita suddenly appears alive. Just as the marriage is about to be stopped, Donaldo presents documents proving Carmelo’s marriage to Conchita was never legal. With the truth revealed, Conchita is escorted away, and Carmelo finally claims both his championship and the woman he loves.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ROSA DEL ROSARIO, MARY WALTER, FLORENTINO BALLECER, RITA RICA, MANUEL BARBEYTO, ANDRES GUEVARA, RUDY CONCEPCION, TOR VILLANO, TAITA SARI IN "ANG BUHOK NI ESTER" (1936)

The Tribune, January 14, 1936---

The much-heralded cinema version of Aurelio Tolentino's famous novel, '"Ang Buhok ni Ester," is opening tomorrow at the Fox Theater after having reaped the plaudits of Manila newspapermen and the members of the board of censors for motion pictures who previewed it.

"Ang Buhok ni Ester" ushers in a new era in the making of talking pictures in the country. The hitherto virgin field of the Tagalog classics is for the first time invaded by the movies, and we may expect that it is the harbinger of a new day for local literature.

"Ang Buhok ni Ester" is a story of a rich family in Central Luzon who is subjected to blackmail by a band of outlaws headed by a relative of a family. Into this puzzle is thrown in a love story that is unique because it demands life itself, to satisfy its desire.

A delicately woven plot has been utilized to good mesure by Director Agapito R. Conchu who has produced a story very faithful to the novel itself.

The movie starred Rosa del Rosario, Mary Walter, Florentino Ballecer, Rita Rica, Manuel Barbeyto, Andres Buevara, Rudy Concepcion, Tor Villano, Taita Sari.
