AMALIA FUENTES: EARLY MOVIE CAREER 1950s-60s

Ibulong Mo sa Hangin (1966)- Her convincing performance in this movie earned her the Famas Best Actress award; The film was directed by National Artist Gerry De Leon

Amalia Fuentes, dubbed the "Elizabeth Taylor of the Philippines," was another prized talent of Sampaguita Pictures. She was launched into full stardom together with Juancho Gutierrez in 1956 in the film, Movie Fan. As a young star, she starred in such memorable movies like Pretty Boy (1957); Amy, Susie and Tessie (1960); Estela Mondragon (1960); Dayukdok (1961) and Amaliang Mali-Mali (1962). She was often paired with then reel and real life partner, suave and debonair Romeo Vasquez, (see another post for the Amalia-Romeo starrers), from which she bore a child named Anna Liza or Liezl (Liezl is now happily married to actor Albert Martinez). During her entire career, she was nominated 5 times by the FAMAS and was awarded the 1966 FAMAS Best Actress in Gerry de Leon’s Ibulong Mo sa Hangin.

Ms. AMALIA FUENTES was not just "another prized talent of Sampaguita Pictures". She was in fact the BOX OFFICE QUEEN of the 60s and 70s, with countless box office hits and record breakers. AMALIA was also the highest paid actress of her generation. She was the most successful actress movie producer with her AM Productions which produced movies for 2 decades.

O C'mon, susan roces was the Queen of Sampaguita Pictures in the 60s. AMALIA FUENTES was the certified BOX OFFICE MOVIE QUEEN OF PHILIPPINE MOVIES in 60s. That is only one of the reasons why AMALIA was definitely and infinitely the BIGGER QUEEN than susan.

Amalia Fuentes received 9 Famas nominations for Best Actress and not 5 as published in this blog. She was awarded by the Famas as Best Actress for Ibulong Mo Sa Hangin.

In 1973, she won her second Best Actress Award in the Manila Film Festival for Pagibig Mo Buhay Ko.

Amalia Fuentes is Asia's Most Beautiful Actress, the original movie queen tagged as Superstar, a 9 times FAMAS nominee for best actress and 1 win for best actress, the first actress who became an independent producer. M not against Susan, I also admire her achievements somehow, but as of comparing to Amalia's achievement, I believe she is only second best. Even watching their movies in sampaguita days, it's Amalia Fuentes's name always comes first in the billing.
