SCREENWRITER JOAQUIN "JAKE" TORDESILLAS, 68

Show business woke up to sad news Friday morning that award-winning movie scriptwriter Joaquin “Jake” Tordesillas, whose credits include the iconic ‘80s youth flick “Bagets,” among many other blockbuster hits, had passed away at age 68.
GMA Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment Lilybeth Rasonable, for whom Tordesillas had been working as creative consultant until recently, posted the following statement on Facebook: “It is with great sadness and deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved Joaquin ‘Jake’ Tordesillas on June 30, 2017.
“Almost two years ago, Jake had an unfortunate accident that resulted in knee surgery. This has caused him extreme pain—not only physically but emotionally as well. Furthermore, Jake underwent both physical rehabilitation and psychotherapy.
“When the excruciating pain continued, he got depressed and had to take personal leaves of absence from his work.”
Besides Bagets, Tordesilla’s filmography also includes defining movies of several generations, such as Maryo J. delos Reyes’ critically acclaimed “High School Era ’65,” the Nora Aunor-starrer “Annie Batumbakal” (1979), Vilma Santos’ “Tagos ng Dugo” (1987), and Alice Dixon’s “My Other Woman” (1990) to name a few.
Eventually turning his sights on television, he has worked for the creative departments of the country’s three major networks—ABS-CBN, TV5, and GMA Network—working and thriving in his last lengthy stint for Channel 7. There, he helped develop among others the grand period series “Amaya,” the long running drama anthology “Magpakailanman,” the groundbreaking gay-themed soap “My Husband’s Lover,” and also the recently concluded teen prime time hit, “Meant to Be.”
The well-loved and well-respected showbiz creative is now lying in state at the Loyola Memorial Chapel along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. Funeral services have yet to be announced. TESSA MAURICIO-ARRIOLA
