THE WAR YEARS (1942- 1945): LEOPOLDO SALCEDO, FERNANDO POE, ANGEL ESMERALDA, NORMA BLANCAFLOR, ROSA AGUIRRE IN "DAWN OF FREEDOM" (1944)

In December 1942, the Japanese centralized film production and distribution under Eiga Heikusa to control imported films and promote war propaganda. Its launch featured "Toyo no Gaika," a documentary showcasing Japanese military victories in the Philippines. Film became a key tool in advancing the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere by discrediting American influence, promoting Japan as Asia’s leader, and reshaping Filipino identity.

To further these aims, the Japanese produced a major propaganda film directed by Abe Yutaka, with Filipino filmmaker Gerardo de Leon as collaborator. Shot from March to August 1943 using Japanese actors and Filipino prisoners of war, the film dramatized the American withdrawal from Manila. Premiering in Tokyo in February 1944 under the title "Ano Hatte O Utte," it was later released in the Philippines as "The Dawn of Freedom" (Liwayway ng Kalayaan) and was officially premiered in March 1944 with prominent Philippine and Japanese officials in attendance.

Release Date March 8, 1944/ Lyric and Ideal Theatres

Synopsis: The film begins with Manila being declared an open city. Three Filipino officers—Capt. Reyes (Leopoldo Salcedo), Capt. Gomez (Fernando Poe), and Lt. Garcia (Angel Esmeralda)—prepare to join the retreating American forces bound for Bataan. In emotional farewells, they part from their families. Before leaving, Lt. Garcia’s younger brother, Tony, asks for a keepsake: an enemy helmet.

As the Americans hastily abandon Manila in speeding vehicles, Tony is nearly run over while trying to snatch a Japanese leaflet. He is rescued by Ikejima, a Japanese soldier, who takes him to the hospital. Over time, a friendship grows between the two, leading Tony’s mother to develop trust in the Japanese.

At the front, Filipino soldiers suffer harsh treatment from their arrogant American superiors, causing unrest in the camp. Capt. Gomez eventually strays into a Japanese encampment and is struck by the compassion shown by those he had been taught to regard as invaders. Gradually, he becomes a vocal supporter of the Japanese.

The other two officers meet tragic fates. Lt. Garcia is sent on patrol and ambushed by his own suspicious American commanders. He dies clutching an American helmet, later recovered by Capt. Gomez. Capt. Reyes, meanwhile, is shot by retreating American soldiers who had taken refuge in a tunnel; as he lies dying, he manages to kill the treacherous commander.

In the final scene, after the Americans are successfully driven out, Capt. Gomez bids farewell to the Japanese soldier. He then presents Tony with the promised souvenir, bearing a note written by his late brother: “This is the helmet of the enemy.”

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: CORAZON NOBLE, ROGELIO DE LA ROSA, ANGEL ESMERALDA, LILIA VIZCONDE, WITH BERT LE ROY, RITA RICA, JUSTINA DAVID IN "KAHAPON LAMANG" (1940)

With Corazon Noble, Rogelio de la Rosa, Angel Esmeralda, Lilia Vizconde and Bert Le Roy, Rita Rica and Justina David heading a cast of hundred;  with a stirring story that is set to the tempo of heartbeats, songs, fun, dances and romances, "Kahapon Lamang," Sampaguita's last and biggest film achievement for 1940, is opening at the Grand today.

This picture which is produced on a lavished scale to bring the year to a close is marked with cinematic highlights that the silver screen has never been graced before. It is directed by Manuel Silos, whose recent directorial success was "Diwa ng Awit." Its story which was written by Olympio La Torre, who is, incidentally, the assistant director of the picture, unfolds the lives of four ambitious people, bursting with the freshness of youth, in quest of fame and popularity in the local radio business and, of love and eventual haziness. Rogelio de la Rosa is seen as a radio announcer whose faith in women is lost from the moment he is jilted by the woman who is about to become his life's companion, so much that he has turned his life into one of debauchery and aimless existence. His popularity as a radio announcer wanes as a result. But Corazon Noble comes to regenerate him and, instill in him a love that is greater than any he has experienced before. And life again becomes to him worth living and striving for. But a complication arises when Lilia Vizconde as Corazon's cousin, is found to be also in love with Rogelio. This piece of news rocks the bottom of the heart of Angel Esmeralda, who plays the role of a radio pianist and friend of Rogelio, because from the very beginning, Angel has already reserved a tender spot in his heart for Lilia. How they are able to pull themselves away from all this heart mess provides a series of laughable, gay but sometimes sad moments on the screen.

"Kahapon Lamang" has magnificence in settings. The biggest and the most beautiful of them all is the reconstruction of a night club which has for its orchestra platform a big clock with a radius of approximately ten feet. This night club setting which serves as a merry background for the New Year celebration sequence of the picture occupied the whole of studio A of Sampaguita.

Professors Constancio de Guzman and Santiago S. Suare joined hands in the contribution of the musical scores. There are seven songs in all which will, undoubtedly, set cinema audience humming and keep them abreast with the spirit of the season. Luis D. Santos is responsible for the pictorial brilliance of "Kahapon Lamang."

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: CORAZON NOBLE, ROGELIO DE LA ROSA, LOTA DELGADO, ANGEL ESMERALDA, WITH PRECIOSO PALMA, JUANITO MARTINEZ, BENNY MACK, ROMY BRION IN "ESTRELLITA" (1940)

The usual excellence and showmanship that characterize a Sampaguita production predominate in "Estrellita," a musical adventure-romance opening today, at the Grand, which brings to the screen a great stellar cast, composed of piquant Corazon Noble, exciting Rogelio de la Rosa, girlish Lota Delgado and suave Angel Esmeralda. These are the four stars that provide heart-balming interest to the song-studded, swiftly-paced truly delightful story of "Estrellita." These are the four stars that will surely receive the plaudits of the local movie world for their magnificent performances in this Sampaguita unique offering of the month. In addition to the leading players, Precioso Palma, Juanito Martinez, Guillermo Torres, Benny Mack and Romy Brion head the supporting cast.

The story of "Estrellita" has an exciting blend of music, comedy, adventure and romance. Corazon Noble carries the title role as a beautiful Spanish countess born of a Filipina mother, and is a sister of Rogelio de la Rosa. At the termination of the Spanish Civil war, in their castle in Spain, they accidentally find, a secret compartment from which they extract half of an old parchment which they learn from a diary is a chart of an enormous treasure buried by their grandfather somewhere in the suburbs, of Manila. So to the Philippines they came in search of treasure, romance, adventure and thrills. They find love, of course, with Lota Delgado and Angel Esmeralda.

How they succeed against many odds to get the enormous treasure provides the picture with an ending that is packed with thrills and drama. Based on a story written by Dr. Gerardo de Leon and Bert Covit, the film has been produced under the masterful direction of the authors themselves with Billy Candelaria assisting. "Estrellita' is filled up with melodies what with four prominent composers, namely, Dr. Gerardo de Leon himself, Prof. Constancio de Guzman, Tito Arevalo and Conrado Conde contributing the musical scores. Higino J. Fallorina is responsible for the excellent photography. So it is that you should not fail to miss "Estrellita" a Sampaguita picture at its very best!

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ANGEL ESMERALDA, TITO AREVALO, LINA ALVA, LITA ZABALA IN "LIHIM NG DAGAT-DAGATAN" (1939)

Angel Esmeralda has never failed to charm you, in his magnificent interpretation of the truly difficult role in "Lihim ng Dagat-Dagatan", he will sweep you off your feet. Never has he given so much to a role. All the power and depth of feeling, all the passion and intensity the stars soul is capable of and which hitherto have been almost ignored by his studios, found expression, as it were, at last in “Porong,”  the simple farmer of "Lihim ng Dagat-Dagatan", who had simple wants, simple thoughts, simple fears, — until he loved.  Love made him know a multitude of emotions, made him strive desperately for a glimpse of heaven, made him pass through hell. Now a man, conscious of right and wrong, sensitive to the slightest hurt —now a beast, brutal, nigh crazed, numb to all that is good and noble — Angel Esmeralda runs the gamut of emotions in this, his greatest role.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ANGEL ESMERALDA, PURITA STA. MARIA, ANTONINA HERNANDEZ, FLEUR DE LIS, ESTELA MARI, ROSA DEL MAR, GERARDO DE LEON, TITO AREVALO IN "DASALANG PERLAS" (1938)

Never before in all the history of local motion pictures has the love of a mother been more tenderly, more exquisitely portrayed as in this latest release of Parlatone. A mother's simple life, her privations and hardships, her sacrifice ---big and small--- all those have been most delicately set forth in this moving picture portrait of a mother. The things mother lets herself go without for the children's merest whims, the pain and heartache she bears for their future and happiness, all the worry and care she goes into for love of them, nothing has been omitted. The title itself is replete with meaning. “Dasalang Perlas"---beads of pearl--- each pearl a drop of tear from mother s eyes, each tear a pain pricking at her heart. All the pathos, all the tenderness and suffering a woman's is capable of have been poured into this moving picture of life and a mother.

Angel Esmeralda heads and all star cast. The delightful ignoramus of "Binatang Bukid" becomes a serious youth, filled with compelling earnestness and a burning desire to succeed on his own. He leaves home, love, life with people he knew and loved, and goes a-roving, penetrating into stranger soils, living with strange people. Angel's fans will find a delightfully new Angel. And as always, his magnificent naturalness throws a cast of greatness over his role. Fans will want to see him not one but twice in "Dasalang Perlas."

This picture shall be remembered by all moviedom for a great actress. She is Antonina Hernandez, the girl who plays the role of mother. She is really just a girl, but perfect make-up, exquisite acting make her portrayal a picture in itself, a veritable jewel. Because of her, "Dasalang Perlas" shall be unforgettable.

Purita Sta. Maria. Estela Mari, Fleur de Lis, Rosa del Mar--- BEAUTY, a whole garden full of it, is present in "Dasalang Perlas" making the picture a treat for the emotions and a feast for the eyes. Gerardo de Leon and Tito Arevalo add strength and power to the picture by their splendid portrayal of sons. These young men have talent above the ordinary, they can more than speak, they can act. "Dasalang Perlas" give them roles worthy at last of their great talents.
