Believed to have been drowned along with the other prisoners in a shipwreck on their way to a penal colony, Juan was swept away on an island where Mang Pekto (Gil de Leon) and his family had isolated themselves.

Pekto abandoned city life when he discovered his wife’s infidelity. He took refuge in this island with his daughters Lilian (Norma Blancaflor) and Estrella (Priscilla Cellona) and sister Lalia (Naty Bernardo).

After recuperating, Juan disguised himself as Juaning Marcelino. He soon fell in love with Lilian. However, Rolando (Jaime Castellvi), the captain of the ship that delivers supplies to the family, was also in love with Lilian. He found out Juan’s true identity and informed the authorities about it. Juan was arrested.

For a time, Juan’s case was reopened and with new evidence recovered, he was acquitted. Pekto and his family, on the other hand, went back to the city hoping to live a normal life. Juan and Lilian are eventually reconciled.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: LIRIO LERMA, JAIME DE LA ROSA, PACITA DEL RIO, WITH NATY BERNARDO, PAQUITO DEL ROSARIO, PATRICIA MIJARES, TONY ARNALDO, PEDRO CRUZ, JOSE CRIS SOTO IN "IBONG SAWI" (1941)/ UPDATED

Treated with the same surpassing directorial ingenuity characteristic of "Pakiusap," "Ikaw Rin" and other Octavio Silos successes, "Ibong Sawi," Excelsior's latest production as well as Director Octavio Silos' first vehicle for 1941, starring Lirio Lerma, Jaime de la Rosa and Pacita del Rio, opens today at the Dalisay theatre on its first-run schedule in Manila.

Positively the best work of Director Silos to date, "Ibong Sawi"— based on one of the best-read novels by Susana de Guzman — is easily conceded to fulfill the cine-goers' idea of a well proportioned screen play. Featured in the stellar cast are Lirio Lerma, formerly known to cine and radio fans as Lirio Lakindanum, Jaime de la Rosa, brother of Rogelio de la Rosa, and Pacita del Rio, smooth-going movie personality, well-known for her fluent "other woman" characterizations. A capable supporting cast composed of old time players and new talents are also featured— they are, Naty Bernardo, Raquito "Bolero" del Rosario, Patricia Mijares, Tony Arnaldo, Pedro "Tembong" Cruz and Jose Cris Soto.

The story of "Ibong Sawi" is sure fire in its dramatic embodiments, amusing in its comedy flavorings and heartwarming in its highly melodramatic conclusion. It is about a country physician and a charming young woman who love enduringly in spite of a powerful barrier in the person of the physician's legal wife. The story presents in a comprehensively detailed manner the manner the struggle between two conflicting forces — the doctor on one side and his wife on the other — trying to outdo each other, the former to justify his right to love and happiness and the latter to give vent to her frivolous nature. How the physician's Illicit love-affair triumphs and what happens to his wile is the principal intrigue in the plot.

Lirio Lerma and Jaime de la Rosa are perfectly convincing as the illicit lovers. Pacita de Rio as the physician's legal wife is fluent. Among the supporting players, Naty Bernardo, Tony Arnaldo and PatriciaMijares deserve mention for their fine performances.

"Ibong Sawi" features Prof. J. Buencamino’s composition of the same name as its theme song. The musical numbers were handled by Prof. Constancio de Guzman. Comedy mix-ups featuring Pedro ‘Tembong’ Cruz and Jose Cris Soto and beautiful dance interludes, including the popular "Quezon Walk," arc among the higllights of this latest Excelsior production.

THE FIFTIES # 440: JAIME DE LA ROSA, EMMA ALEGRE, NENITA VITAL IN GREGORIO M. FERNANDEZ'S "HUKOM ROLDAN" (1957)

"Hukom Roldan" (1957)

Release Date May 24- June 2, 1957/ Center
Story Luz del Mundo
Screenplay Consuelo P. Osorio
Direction Dr. Gregorio M. Fernandez
Cast Jaime de la Rosa, Emma Alegre, Nenita Vidal, Alfonso Carvajal, Oscar Keese, Nela Alvarez

I always admire the works of Director Gregorio Fernandez. He was an outstanding director of the 40s to 50s, a terrific storyteller and noted for his remarkable and memorable films like Malvarosa, Luksang Tagumpay, Emily and Higit sa Lahat where he captured the Famas Best Director and Picture in 1955. Add to that list is Hukom Roldan, an absorbing and engrossing story of a judge, involved in a very traumatic domestic problems and emerging from it all still a man of high conviction.

The movie tells of an incorruptible and dedicated judge, known as Hukom Roldan (played by Jaime de la Rosa), whose once quaint and quiet family life was shattered when he handed a verdict unfavorable to his erstwhile and powerful friend, Don Silvestre (Oscar Keese). Humiliated, an evil scheme was hatched by Don Silvestre that would place the judge’s wife, Chita (Emma Alegre) in a very uncompromising position making the judge suspect that she really committed an adulterous relationship. He succeeded and the couple separated. The irony of it all was that Judge Roldan, who has been just and fair in all his court decisions, swiftly and readily ‘convicted’ his wife without knowing her side and was convinced of the whole thing. The father took custody of the only child, a daughter named Gloria, who was 3 or 4 then. She was sent abroad and made to believe that her mother was already dead. Gloria (Nenita Vidal), now a teenager, returned home. On the hand, Chita opened up a modest dress shop and was successful. One of her clients was Gloria. Chita later knew that Gloria was her long lost daughter and never revealed it.

Meanwhile, Don Silvestre was charged in court for murder and the case was being tried on the sala of Judge Roldan. As usual, Don Silvestre went to the judge for help if he would sway the verdict in his favor. The judge said that he would only decide upon the merits of the case. Judge Roldan cleared Don Silvestre and to his surprise, Don Silvestre collapsed and had a heart attack. Before he died, he confided to the judge that his wife was innocent and he manipulated it all.
