Philippine cinema depicted the collaborator in the darkest of colors; he is the most despicable and loathsome of villains and deserving his most dastardly fate.

In “Hantik,” a member of the Makapili, the “League of Patriotic Filipinos” organized by the Japanese (the society’s name later became synonymous with traitor), inspects the sacks of rice received as some kind of tax from the townspeople. He exposes the trick played by the starving farmers who mix rice with other substances. He is more vicious than the Japanese and is shot down in the same cruel fashion by the guerrillas.

… Similarly in “Hantik,” Teresa (Celia Flor) befriends the Japanese commander, Colonel Nasimoto (Eusebio Gomez) in order to ask the release of her lover’s father. Her actions are misinterpreted by her lover (Leopoldo Salcedo) and for a time, she is branded as collaborator.

Mutya ng Pasig, directed by Richard Abelardo, is a supernatural melodrama of a woman's misfortune and suffering interwoven with the legend of the Pasig. The legend itself is inspired by the immortal kundiman of the director's brother, Nicanor Abelardo. The movie, released in 1950, starred screen legends Jose Padilla, Jr., Rebecca Gonzales, Teody Belarmino and Delia Razon.

Mercedes (Rebecca Gonzales), aside from being the town's current mutya (fiesta queen), is about to be married to his childhood sweetheart. (Roger Nite). Unknown to them, Dr. Modesto Millar (Jose Padilla Jr.), is also secretly in love with Mercedes. One night, Modesto's house is robbed and the blame is placed on Mercedes' groom-to-be. He is arrested and imprisoned after which Modesto courts Mercedes and eventually marries her. When the former fiancé is finally released, gossip spreads about him and Mercedes.

Consumed by anger and jealousy and believing the superstitious talk that the baby girl is not his because of an ugly birthmark, he banishes Mercedes and the child, chased by his monstrous dog, and she drowns in the river. From that point on, a legend spreads about a woman, a sirena, haunting the river singing a sad but beautiful song.

Mercedes' daughter is saved by a childlesss couple (Tolindoy and Angge) and grows into a lovely woman (Delia Razon) inheriting her mother's love for music. She is betrothed to Basilio (Teody Belarmino), the son of Mercedes' former flame. When Delia becomes the town's mutya, a commotion ensues and in the dead of night, she takes a banca and ventures into the dark river. Basilio is frantic and searches for her, believing she may have drowned.

He hears the haunting song and witnesses the apparition, but it is no sirena, but the ghost of the lovely Mercedes, hovering over a bed of water lilies with the practically lifeless body of her daughter at her feet. Mercedes is singing the haunting kundiman "… ako ang Mutya ng Pasig…"

The townspeople take the unconscious Delia to Don Modesto but at first he refuses to treat the young woman until he sees the birthmark on the young woman's shoulder. He finally realizes the truth and finally accepts Delia as his daughter.

Tiagong Akyat was one of the most famous outlaws in Philippine history. He terrorized Manila and the nearby provinces in the 1920s, looting homes and establishments. There was a legend that he only looted the homes of the rich and even helped the poor. Such was his notoriety that rarely had a newspaper been issued in any day without any news about him.

Born Santiago Ronquillo in Imus, Cavite sometime in the late 19th century, Tiagong Akyat got his moniker because he simply entered homes and loot it of its wealth amidst the horrified residents (it should be noted that during the early 20th century, few homes had gates).

Legend has it that Tiagong Akyat possessed an amulet that made him invisible. This amulet is called "Tagabulag" in Philippine folklore. People believed that this was the reason why the Manila police failed to capture him, despite huge rewards awaiting for the person to bring to Police Tiago "Dead or Alive".

Yet, despite Tiagong Akyat's notoriety, there was existing rumors that he was a "Robin Hood" character, helping the poor and looting the rich.

In 1923, Manila Chief of Police John Fulton Green received an intelligence report that Tiagong Akyat was seen in Noveleta, Cavite. In cooperation with the Philippine constabulary, Green organized a formidable force to capture Tiagong Akyat. It was rumored that Tiago may have been ill when the Constabulary surrounded the house in Noveleta where Tiago was hiding.

Despite Tiago's defenseless condition, the constabulary riddled the house with multiple shots, killing Tiago.

The Manila police was criticized for this overkill, despite the fact that they ended the career of one of the most famous outlaws in Philippine history.
