Fernando Poe knew the hell that was Bataan... "the authentic story of a people fit to live because they were not afraid to die!" says the ad in this 1946 war drama, "Dugo ng Bayan (I Remember Bataan)," Palaris Films' humble tribute to the Filipino people.
Poe was a reserve officer in the Philippine army and reported to service as a first lieutenant on 20 December 1941, barely two weeks after the outbreak of the war. He retreated with the USAFFE forces to Bataan he saw action until the fall of the combined US and Filipino forces there 9 April 1942. He was captured and was part in the cruel Death March, but upon incarceration he was released when Japanese officers realized that he was a famous movie star. They saw Poe as someone who would be more useful as a pawn of propaganda in their marquee movie, "Dawn of Freedom," than as a prisoner of war.
