Sampaguita Pictures was founded in 1937 by Pedro Vera. Its inaugural release, "Bituing Marikit" (1937), became a major commercial success and starred the era’s biggest box-office draw, Elsa Oria—hailed as the Philippines’ “singing nightingale.” Directed by Carlos Vander Tolosa, the film also featured Rogelio dela Rosa and Ely Ramos.
In 1946, Elsa Oria returned to the screen in "Ulilang Watawat," marking Sampaguita Pictures’ first production following the Liberation.
