THE 2010 METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL ENTRIES- INDIE FILMS

This year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) pay tribute to independent films. Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair and Metro Manila Filmfest (MMFF) executive committee over-all chair, lawyer Francis Tolentino said five independent films were chosen by a Selection Committee from among the nine independent film producers who submitted their entries in this year’s festival.

Dubbed as a Tribute to the Indie Films-Philippine Premier, the exhibition of these five independent films serve as a prelude to the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival . These movies were Senior Year by Jerrold Tarog; Nasaan si Hefte by Jonah Lim; Presa by Adolf Alix Jr.; Slow Fade by Rommel Sales; and Rindido by Noriel Jarito. The five indie films, which were screened at Robinson's Galleria last Dec.16 to 20, will be for exhibition only and not in competition with the eight official entry mainstream movies.

He said that the event intends to promote quality independent films and to encourage filmmakers with limited budget. “This is our way of helping new filmmakers to showcase their movies and to increase public awareness on these kind of films which are not commercially shown in local theaters but are internationally acclaimed in foreign film festivals,” he added.

By supporting the indie films, the MMFF in effect calls the attention of the movie-going public to take notice and patronize the new breed of filmmakers whose pictures are attuned and relevant to the present times. This will also introduce the indie filmmakers to the viewers outside Metro Manila, which comprise 45 percent of the movie market in the country.

Just watch two vintage Dolphy movies over the weekend--- a 1962 VP Pictures' Tanzan The Mighty at QTV11 and a DVD copy of 1965 James Bond spoof, Genghis Bond, Agent 1-2-3. The latter was Babalu's debut movie. A double treat!

PUGO IN "ANG TATAY KONG KALBO" (1963)

I was a bit surprised to see this 1963 black-and-white movie, Ang Tatay Kong Kalbo on TV-cable Cinema One several months back. Popular TV host-comedian Pepe Pimentel, of Kuwarto O Kahon fame, was one of the lead stars who played one of the sons of legendary comic Pugo. Pepe played the role of a bumbling boxer trained by his father Pugo, who happened to have a formulated lotion, the smell of which would make their opponents groggy. Several named stars appeared in cameo roles, including boxing legend Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde.

THE LEGENDARY DOLPHY AND NIDA BLANCA AS "JOHN & MARSHA" (MOVIE ADS 1974-1991)

John & Marsha was the longest-running and most-watched prime time comedy sitcom in the Philippines during the 70s and 80s that aired weekly on RPN Channel 9. It starred Dolphy,Nida Blanca, Dely Atay-Atayan and Maricel Soriano. The show ran from 1973 to 1990. The cast include John Purúntong (Dolphy), his wife Marsha (Nida Blanca), their children Rolly (Rolly Quizon), Shirley (Maricel Soriano), and, later in the show, John-John, and his pesky and nagging mother-in-law Doña Delilah (Dely Atay-atayan). It ran every week for 17 years until 1990. A spin-off from the series, John En Shirley, aired on ABS-CBN in 2006 with only two returning cast members, Dolphy and Maricel Soriano, reprising their old roles.

Marsha Jones marries the impoverished John Purúntong much to the dismay of her wealthy mother, Doña Delilah. Although her daughter married the unemployed John, Doña Delilah often paid a visit to their house along with her maid, Matutína. When money was required, she would tell her maid Matutína to go sweep peso bills off the floor. Despite this, John rejects all the financial help Doña Delilah offers his family, the result of which is a hilarious exchange of insults between the two. The show ends with Doña Delilah's loud catchphrase "Kayà ikáw, John, magsumíkap ka!" ("Therefore you, John, have to work hard!") to insult John's capability as the father of the household. They end up making amends, giving each other abrupt hugs with Doña Delilah exclaiming, "Peace man!" to proclaim peace. (Source: wikipedia)
