Another set of wonderful drawings and illustrations from National Artist Carlos 'Botong' Francisco. Titled, The Native Land's Mythological Monsters, the great artist from Angono captured the world of native mythology rendering his own interpretation of the manananggals, aswang, tikbalang, nuno sa punso, among others.

THE ART OF CARLOS 'BOTONG' FRANCISCO # 2 of 3: "BERNARDO CARPIO"

National Artist Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco also did drawings and illustrations on Bernardo Carpio, a legendary figure in Philippine mythology, in which the great artist from Angono masterfully illustrated and executed. It was published in the This Week Magazine in 1955.

THE ART OF CARLOS 'BOTONG' FRANCISCO #1 OF 3: " SIETE INFANTES DE LARA"

A National Artist for Painting and 1964 Republic of the Philippines Cultural Heritage awardee, Carlos Villaluz Francisco or Botong to his friends, is considered the greatest muralist of the country. Also known as the Poet of Angono, he brought back the art of mural painting in the Philippines and was its most distinguished painter in his time. He was on the forefront of modernist art in the country, and with Victorio C. Edades and Galo B. Ocampo became part of “The Triumvirate” of modern art. (wikipedia)

Botong did several series of illustrations and drawings for This Week Magazine, a supplement of The Manila Chronicle. Best known for his historical epics, Botong's rendition of images came from mythology, history, legend customs and contemporary life.
