MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ROSARIO MORENO, JOSE PADILLA, JR., WITH FERNANDO ROYO, PEDRO FAUSTINO, NATI RUBI, FRANCO GARCIA, EXEQUIEL SEGOVIA, PUGO & TOGO, CLARITA DE RUIZ, MERCEDES DE GAVINO IN "MAGPAKAILAN MAN" (1940)

Excelsior Pictures presents “Magpakailan Man,” a deeply moving drama about a blind beggar girl who finds love in an idle, luck-chasing gambler—and her remarkable rise from poverty. Opening today at the Grand Theatre, the film bears the distinctive directorial touch of Carlos Padilla, acclaimed for such well-received works as “Sa Dating Pugad” and “Ave Maria.”

Critics hail “Magpakailan Man” as one of Excelsior’s finest dramatic offerings to date. Rosario Moreno, among the brightest stars in Philippine cinema, delivers a memorable portrayal of the blind heroine with a realism so convincing it transcends mere acting. This challenging role—her first of its kind—further showcases her emotional depth and artistry.

Opposite her, Jose Padilla, Jr. gives a sincere and compelling performance as the unemployed young man who turns to gambling to survive. Together, Moreno and Padilla form a screen partnership that brings heart and humanity to Gervasio Santiago’s touching story.

The film weaves pathos, intrigue, and suspense through the intersecting lives of the humble beggar and the reckless gambler. There is heartbreak in the heroine’s failure to recognize her devoted lover—and ultimate joy when fate reunites them in a moving finale.

Rounding out the cast are Fernando Royo, Pedro Faustino, Nati Rubi, Franco Garcia, Exequiel Segovia, Pugo & Togo, Clarita de Ruis, and Mercedes de Gavino.

Musical direction is by Miguel Velarde, Jr., whose tuneful compositions add warmth and charm to the production. Luis F. Nolasco served as production manager.

“Magpakailan Man” stands as a tender and heartfelt story of love, sacrifice, and redemption—an Excelsior production sure to touch audiences “for all time.”  (The Tribune, June 20, 1940)
