RONNIE RICKETTS: ACTOR-PRODUCER-DIRECTOR (MOVIE ADS 1982- 2003)

Ronnie Ricketts, a ramp model, entered the movie scene in the early 80s at the time when his girlfriend then was Maricel Soriano, who at that early stage was starting to blossom into a fine versatile actress. Ronnie was being built as the other love interest of Maricel, even doing a movie, I Love You, I Hate You, together with her and perennial partner Wiliam Martinez. The movie, which was being billed as "Today's most popular love team in the most controversial reel and real-life romantic triangle," was to stir up the purportedly love triangle of Maricel-William-Ronnie. However, such gimmick didn't click among fans and the moviegoing public.

Left- I Love You, I Hate You (1982)- Stars Maricel Soriano, William Martinez and Ronnie Ricketts/ Directed by Mel Chionglo

Right- John & marsha '86 (1986)- Stars Dolphy, Nida Blanca, maricel Soriano, Ronnie Ricketts, Rolly Quizon, Dely Atay-Atayan, Matutina, Madel de Leon and Panchito/ Directed by Apollo Arellano

For a time, Ronnie’s career was in limbo.

With his muscular built and physique, he went into a massive martial arts training and body-building. He reinvented himself and resurfaced in the latter part of the 80s as a young action star. Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla, Jr. offered him a good role in Imus Productions’ Sparrow Unit, which propelled his career and eventually earned him the first FAMAS Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1987. He then appeared in a string of action movies--- Target Maganto, Alex Boncayao Brigade, Gapos Gang, among others. Slowly but surely, he made a name for himself. He was also nominated twice in the FAMAS Best Actor award in 1990 for Tatak ng isang Api and 1991 for Isa-isahin ko Kayo. He also produce and direct (as Ronn-Rick) as well as star in his own movies.

I remember him best in Chito S. Rono's Ikaw Lang (1993) with Vilma Santos and Ilaban Mo, Bayan Ko!: The Obet Pagdanganan Story (1997) with the late senator Raul S. Roco in a very special role as Ninoy Aquino.

  1. Simon:

In the late 1970s, Ronnie's aunt, Princess Naldo (sister of Edith, Ronnie's mom), asked me some help to start a design studio at Edith's house (can't remember now, I think it was in BelAir). Ronnie was maybe 16 or 17 then and his older brother Christopher (called Topher) was into martial arts. I learned so much from the guy about Martial Arts for such a short time.

Ronnie was a quiet guy, the antithesis of his older brother. And I know his favorite chair in the house.

When he was reading a book, or studying, he loved to sit on the closed toilet bowl. He-he.

Several times, when I was going to use the bathroom, Ronnie would be sitting there, reading. He had to get up to let me pee first, then he would go back there again to continue his reading.
    :)

Rather weird and funny, but this is the most memorable thing I remember about the guy, apart from being very pleasant & quiet.

Looking back, I think it made sense that reading in the bathroom is quite good because it could give you the silence you need to concentrate more on what you're reading, especially during exam weeks.

Sorry, Ronnie. Can't help it. It was a unique way of studying, and you're the only guy I know who did that. Peace, man, if we see each other in San Diego, don't give me a Karate chop.

    :(
