Manuel Conde was known for his Juan Tamad series. Did you know that sometime in 1961, he was supposed to do "Juan Tamad Goes to Malacañang" or "His Excellency Juan Tamad"? It would have been a wonderful sequel to "Juan Tamad Goes to Congress." But for unknown reason, the said movie project didn''t push thru. Here's the ads of the aborted project.
"Juan Tamad Junior" (1980)- Stars Nino Muhlach, Panchito, Babalu, Marissa Delgado, Dondon Nakar Techie Agbayani and Manuel Conde in a special participation/ Directed by Arsenio Bautista
Simon, at last, National Artist na din si Manuel Conde, long overdue na nga, as you said. Pero, kung si Carlo Caparas, Cecille Guidote Alvarez ginawa nilang National Artists na (Oh well, paalis na kasi si Gloria, ano?), they should have included Francisco Coching, Mars Ravelo, Dolphy and your dad Malang na matagal na dapat naging National Artists. I have nothing against Carlo Caparas and Cecille Guidote Alvarez to be proclaimed as National Artists, pero merong mga dapat unahin (mga bata pa naman sila, eh) na really deserving. And besides, dahil dikit sila kay Gloria Arroyo, di maaalis yung mabahiran ng pagdududa. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteRight on the nail, James! Congrats to you, alam ko na malapit kayo sa mga Condes.
ReplyDeleteSimon,
ReplyDeleteMalang is way, way, way, way, long overdue. Naunahan pa ni Caparas. This is total injustice.
Manuel Conde, definitely, absolutely deserving.

Thanks Sir Simon for the post and for spreading the word about Manuel Conde and his great contributions to Philippine Cinema. I agree with Sir James, his recognition is long overdue. I'm happy that he finally got the recognition he truly deserved. I'm proud to have him as my lolo! :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd I was also just as surprised as everybody else that Carlo Caparas is among the awardees this year. Mars Ravelo should have been recognized instead of him, imo. I know more works from Mr. Ravelo than Mr. Caparas... my mom said he made those horrible "taga" movies with Dawn Zulueta in the 90s. What's up with that?!
Congrats, Janice! Talagang deserving ang lolo mo! Regards to the Conde family especially to your Mom.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janice Anne! You mentioned that Manuel Conde is your lolo. What's the name of your parents? My father (Julian Yulo) worked for Manuel Conde and his son Jun Urbano. Actually, Jun, Topie and To Urbano are my ninongs. When Tiyo Naning died, we were in his wake in Pasig (I forgot the name of the church). My father died in 2004 and Tiya Lita, Ate Nene, Iman and Ninong Jun went to his wake in Bulacan. The grandchildren of Manuel Conde I know are only Lito, Amon and Christian, sons of Ninong Jun.
ReplyDeleteSimon,
ReplyDeleteDapat nga Erpat mo ang nandoon sa awards, mientras buhay pa siya.
Rod,
Mi libro ka na ba ni Conde ( coffee table)? mi ginawa si Cesar Hernando ( UST Press), mura lang.
Auggie
