GERRY DE LEON'S "TATLONG KASAYSAYAN NG PAG-IBIG" (1966)

I don't remember the great Gerardo 'Gerry' De Leon directing Tatlong Kasaysayan ng Pag-ibig, a three-part movie starring one of the top love team of the 60s, Amalia Fuentes and Romeo Vasquez. It could be great watching this movie this Valentine's Day.

And speaking of Amalia Fuentes, Dalawang Daigdig ni Carlota was shown recently at Cinema One. I was shocked, almost unbelievable to see this 1970 black-and-white movie. Ms. Fuentes did a wonderful job in portraying two personalities shrouded in mystery. The cinematography was short of astounding capturing the mood, especially the opening scene. It's like watching a 'film noir' film.

Besides Dalawang Daigdig ni Carlota, Joy Productions also produced Blue Boy, the first directorial job of Elwood Perez. Both movies starred Fred Cortez, Jr., which happened to be Anita Linda's son (thanks to JM- see comment box).

  1. Simon:

This Carlota film, indeed, is quite reminiscent of film noir. Funny how the same producer, Johnny Proximo, who admitted that he had no idea about film producing (Joy Production, and her daughter Dorothy Joy was also an actress), was the same guy who produced Bert Bornay's Teenagers songs and Show's serialized BLUE BOY, the first directorial job of Elwood Perez. That film, like Carlota, also starred Fred Cortes Jr, Anita Linda's son. The look of Blue Boy, despite its low-budget, was actually very artistic and quite noir-ish. If only Elwood stuck to this sort of gritty filmmaking and did not go astray like what he had decided later on in his career, he could have been a much better filmmaker.

On the other hand, Tony Cayado, despite those humiliating directorial work for WATARI and ANAK NI WATARI quickies, actually did some very fine films that we can consider as RP best. The 1950s MGA LIGAW NA BULAKLAK is one fine film starring Miss Susan Roces. And DONATA, the Lolita Rodriguez, Gina Pareno and Gina Alajar film - was a visual feast. The opening scene alone was beautifully done that after so many years I still remember it (the murder of Donata's father during a stormy night). It actually parallelled DOUGLAS SIRK's dramatic opening scene of WRITTEN IN THE WIND. If Sirk used the fallen leaves being blown by the autumn wind, Tony Cayado used the rain and the mud to enhance the dramatic effect of a tragic event.

Any of the JOY PRODUCTION films survive? Are they available on DVD?

  2. JM, again as usual, thanks for those insights and trivia--- I have decided to post the "Blue Boy" movie ad just to have a feel of what's the movie is all about. I hope Joy Productions still have a copy of this movie. They also did "Usapang Lalake" with Dante Varona and "Agent Silencer at ang 7 Brassierres" with Rod Navarro. All released in 1970.

  3. Simon, JM, Celso Ad. Castillo's NYMPHA starring Rizza was produced by Joy Productions. I think, meron pang kopya nito na nag-survive.

Tony Cayado reminds me of WERNER HERZOG. Both of them are peripatetic geniuses. Despite their obvious talent, there are moments when they both seem distracted and would do films that don't really matter. Very bizarre.

Yes, Mga Ligaw na Bulaklak is a wonderful film. Lahat ng cast very good, wala akong maipintas. At yung direction talaga ay napakagaling.

    Simon:

Yung mag-asawang Mr. & Mrs. Proximo ay napakababait at generous na mga tao. Unfortunately, Mrs. Proximo died from Cancer at a very young age in the 1970s.
