MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ELSA ORIA IN "BITUING MARIKIT" (1937)--- SAMPAGUITA PICTURES' DEBUT MOVIE

Sampaguita Pictures was established in 1937 by Pedro Vera. Their first movie, Bituing Marikit, a commercial hit in 1937, starred the biggest star at that time, Elsa Oria, the Philippines' singing nightingale. The movie, directed by Carlos Vander Tolosa, also starred Rogelio dela Rosa and Ely Ramos.

  2. Sayang po talaga. Isa ito sa mga napakaraming pelikula hindi nakasurvive. Dito pa naman unang kinanta yung Dahil sa Iyo at si Rogelio dela Rosa pa man din po ang nagkanta. E di sana ngayon pwede na ring pakinggang yan sa mp3 o kung anu man...

    Sir Simon, meron po ba kayong track ng Dahil sa Iyo na version ni dela Rosa? Baka sakali lang po... Gustung gusto ko po talaga kasing mapakinggan yun at si Rogelio pa ang nagkakanta...

  3. Tama ka Sam, "Dahil sa Iyo," was written in 1938 by Mike Velarde, Jr. primarily for the movie "Bituing Marikit" and sung in the movie by Rogelio dela Rosa. I am not sure kung may version ni dela Rosa na nag-eexist.

  6. I can't thank you enough for posting these. Elsa Oria (married name Eastman) was my grandmother and I was treated to stories of her career throughout my childhood. Though I have heard her voice on 78 rpm recordings and seen numerous clippings about her career, I too am saddened I never saw her movies. I know so much was destroyed during the war and when the studio burned down. Her coloratura soprano voice was beautiful and she continued to sing until she passed away in 1995.

    Thank you for bringing a little of my Grandma back to me.
