There’s no problem for Aga Muhlach barging into the movie world since he belonged to the popular celebrity clan ( his aunt Amalia Fuentes was a leading actress of the 50s to 70s; his cousin NiƱo Muhlach was a leading child actor of the 70s, same with Liezl, Amalia’s daughter). Aga appeared briefly as a child star in
May Lalaki sa Ilalim ng Kama (1978) and Aguila (1980). In 1984, he was launched as one of the members of a youth group called Bagets and also the title of the movie. He starred together with four others- Herbert Bautista, JC Bonnin, Raymond Lauchengco and William Martinez. Bagets, considered as the 80s classic and hailed as a landmark in teen-oriented movies, was a sensational box-office hit during its theatrical run and jumpstarted the career of the 15-year old young actor. His next movie project was a starring role in Campus Beat (1984), but it was in the 1985 movie Miguelito, Batang Rebelde, that recognized him as a serious young dramatic actor. Directed by the late Lino Brocka, Aga played the title role of Miguelito, a rebellious youngster in conflict with his mother. It earned him nominations in the FAMAS Best Supporting Actor and GAWAD URIAN Best Actor. In 1987, Muhlach won his first Gawad Urian award, as Best Supporting Actor in Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie (1986). In many of his early movies, he co-starred with another popular young teen, Janice de Belen, with whom he have a son (Iggy, now 22 years old).
