Simon:
ReplyDeleteNaalala ko itong Kwatang, very entertaining.
Divina Valencia was truly gorgeous in this film. She was very young then. He-he.
And the leading man, Roger Calvin, I used to have conversations with him everytime my American friends (from Jusmag) ans I would attend parties or canvassing or coronation of the Goldstar queen and kings there at Goldstar Publications. LOL. In my opinion, Roger was the handsomest actor then in the local film industry. He possesses the so-called: "splendor of order" as defined by Sir Thomas Aquinas when defining beauty. Apart from that, he was also a very kind person, thus, completing the whole package of a true matinee idol.
Is Kwatang available in any form (DVD, VHS, CASETTE, LASER DISC, 8-TRACK)?
Simon,
ReplyDeleteThanks! At last, nai-post mo rin itong mga hinahanap kong komiks novels na ginawang movies like Kwatang, Ngitngit Ng 7 Whistle Bomb and Pomposa.
It's Cher Calvin, James! She is at present one of the news anchor of KTLA, a TV station in Los Angeles.
ReplyDeleteRight, I watch Cher Calvin at KTLA news with Emmett Miller everyday. Both of them came from FOX TV. I actually didn't realize she's Roger's daughter. Like Emmett, she's quite good.
This film studio had produced many quality films and most of them are now gone. Did you know that Hollywood films' master negatives are now all stored in KANSAS CITY? They have the so-called UNDERGROUND CITY - where a city-like underground was dug-up (the entrance is underneath a mountain, and therefore would not be exposed to pollution & deterioration to ruin the negatives. Funny how when you're inside this subterranean city, it's quite bright because it is well-lit and air-conditioned, you'd think you're just outside.
It's really something.
Simon: oh, yes Cher Calvin!
Siguro, ginawa yun after masunog yung studio, ano?
VALENTINA, the one written by Pablo S. Gomez serialized in either Universal or United Komiks?
ReplyDeleteWasn't it done in 1969 or 70?
It was actually borrowed from Mars Ravelo's character VALENTINA, which was borrowed by Ravelo from the Greek Mythology, Medusa.
I was just mentioning this at the PKMB, that Ravelo was copied or let's call it "inspired" (from what inspired him from great Lit.) and made his own (like the character of Gabriel in Maruja - a morose underdog which he borrowed from Gabriel of Thomas Hardy's 1895 novel FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, and then Carlo Caparas used Gabriel, a morose, underdog character as well in AKO'Y LUPA, a few years after Maruja, and was quite reminiscent of Ravelo's Gabriel in Maruja).
What's really good about Ravelo was that, he never sued anyone for being "INSPIRED" by the characters he created. He could have hit the roof when PSG's Valentine was serialized, but he never did, neither did he get mad with Gabriel's Ako'y Lupa.
I thought that wonderful film called ALIPIN NG BUSABOS was made by LARRY SANTIAGO. This one should be released on DVD (or better still on BLU-RAY) and it is a must to have. This film can be considered one of RP's best. Maski yung MILAROSA ni Marlene Dauden. Very nice in Black and white. It really captured its heart-rending theme and it made the film extremely powerful.
Another film I want to see again is ARMANDO DE GUZMAN's IGINUHIT SA BUHANGIN. In black and white as well, starring Lolita Rodriguez and Jay Ilagan. This one is on my list of wonderful Filipino films (in the tradition of India's brilliant film director, GURU DUT).
The one I remember was a TESSIE QUINTANA starrer that Johnny Carson used ro make fun of Ferdinand Marcos after the 1986 People Power. The scene used was a fiesta in a small town and Tessie Quintana, wearing a traditional Filipina saya, was singing. Johnny would say: "and here's Marcos' fiesta". Then a clip of the film rolled. "Here's Marcos' water buffolo!" Then A kalabaw is seen in putikan.
Maybe the Philippines should ask a copy of the master negs of whatever films available and let the Filipinos enjoy them. In filmfest here, many films that are no longer available there, but are still doing their rounds on critic's circle/filmfests here. I even saw Joy Gosiengfiao's SUNUGIN ANG SAMAR here in LA. Manuel Conde's Ghenghis Khan in Vancouver. Tony Cayado's MGA LIGAW NA BULAKLAK in Sanfo.
I really don't know kung si Pablo Gomez yung sumulat ng Valentina, pero it was directed by Santiago Garcia (?) kung di ako nagkakamali. At oo nga pala yung Stardoom, Tubog Sa Ginto, Santiago naligtas.
James:
Kabayan Central was saying that Larry Santiago and Premiere old movies will also be tranbsfered in VHS, god knows why, and God knows when.
Lol.
JM, James, someone told me (from a reliable source)that a taped copy of "Wanted Perfect Mother" was also entrusted to CCP for safekeeping. I Hope they could show this movie in future film festivals.
(He-he-he!)
Simon: That's good news!
