STARS OF THE 60s # 4: JOSEPHINE ESTRADA (MOVIE ADS 1962-69)

Left- Literary Song-Movie Magazine/ June 6, 1963
Right- Movie World Magazine/ March 1964

Josephine Estrada was one of those many beauty titleholders to grace the Philippine movie world in the 60s. Almost as soon she was voted Miss Luzon of 1960, Miss Aviation of 1961 and runner-up in the Miss Philippines pageant losing to eventual winner, Edita Vital by only one vote, Dr. Jose Perez of Sampaguita Pictures was already handing her a movie contract. She decided to skip her medical studies to pursue a movie acting career. She made Ginang Hukom, her debut movie, Sa Linggo ang Bola, The Big Broadcast, Tatlong Panata and Octavia.

In 1962, she finally represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe Pageant. With beauty, brain and talent, there was no turning back for Estrada from then on. She was given an important role and her biggest break in Bird of Paradise, together with two other beauty queens, Cynthia Ugalde and Sylvia Gumabao. With the proper guidance of his mother studio, her career zoomed, more movies followed--- Holiday in Bali, Tanzan the Mighty, Tanzan vs. Tarzan, Prinsipeng Tulisan, Anak ni Kamagong, Ang Rosaryo at ang Tabak, among others. Estrada went freelance sometime in 1965 and became the favorite leading lady of top actors that time--- Joseph Estrada in Tatak: Double Cross, Tony Ferrer in Sabotage and The Infiltrators, Bernard Bonnin in Hijack and Estranghero, Jun Aristorenas, Eddie Gutierrez, Vic Vargas, Eddie Mesa and others.

Josephine Estrada is another Susan Roces when it comes to kindness and humility.

Josephine is a wonderful person, and if I were born during her time, I definitely would have kissed her feet just for her to marry me :).

The first time I've met her was in in 1977 when I was 17 years old. She was the guest in an episode of the TV drama I was writing called Ulila. The first time I saw her, I was awestruck by her beuaty and sweetness, that I told myself: "It would have been nice if I were born at least 15 years or so - earlier, and I would have definitely wooed her.

She's very friendly, soft-spoken, and so refined – all the characteristics that reminded me of my beloved mother.

Whoever married Miss Estrada must have been a very lucky man (do you know who?). I just hope that whoever he is, he should have treated her with tender, loving care. I can't allow anyone like her to weep.

Gosh, I think I'm sounding quite maudlin, but this is how I respect this beautiful lady. She's someone you would really want to put on a pedestal.

Uh-oh, many people might be laughing at me now, but I don't care. It feels so warm inside reminiscing what it's like to be a seventeen year-old boy once again.

    2. Josephine Estrada has a kind hearted; he allowed me to ride in her car during the election campaign of Fred Montilla back in 1984. After 10 years, I received a call in my office, she has made an inquiry related to her letters, she said she is Josephine Estrada and I said nice to hear you, I'm the son of Andy Poe (the real Fernando Poe, Jr.) nephew of fpj. Josephine Estrada lives in Virginia, USA near in my office. Mabait siya pero Hindi kami nagkita. Sa tindi ng init ng araw at di nya ako kilala at nag offer sya na sumakay ako sa car nya.

    2. In Rancho Diablo; she made a good actions figure in the scene. During the early 30's up to the late 60's the relevant of respect was phenomenal, but in early 70's the bomba films made the mistake; the allure of its traditional way distorted the image of Maria Clara until the 90's. Much better to have once more the sarzuela and the sa kabukiran; the limelight of the true nature of our true filipiniana..tangkilikin ang atin tradisyon pagkat tayo'y likas na Filipino. - Waldo Reyes
