PINOY HORROR MOVIES OF THE 70s

Kababalaghan (1969-70)- Stars Eva Marie, Renato Robles, Renato del Prado/ Directed by Ding M. De Jesus

Kampon ni Satanas (1970)- Stars Jimmy Morato, Eva Montes, Marion Douglas, Alex Froilan and Johnny Monteiro/ Directed by Mar B. Isidro

Hollywood’s Exorcist (1973) and The Omen (1976) probably defined the Pinoy horror movies of the 70s. It's more serious in its treatment and most likely provide the frightening and hair-raising experience that Pinoy viewers would want to feel and experience while watching. It was in this decade that some of the best in Pinoy horror genre were produced and shown. It was also in this period that Ms. Susan Roces romped away two consecutive Famas Best actress awards in 1977 and 1978 for Maligno and Gumising Ka Maruja, both considered classic. Another Susan's horror starrer Patayin mo sa Sindak si Barbara (1974) almost made it to the winner's roll and it could have been Susan's first acting trophy. Two of her other movies made in the 70s were also horror films --- Florinda (1973) and Langit, Lupa at Impiyerno (1976).

"How does a Filipino horror film compete with
The Exorcist shown within the same year that had a cult followers and made an indelible terror mark in the minds of the moviegoers who saw it? The answer lies with great production values, skillful editing, top-notch performances of the entire cast, shock and scary value in Celso Ad Castillo's Patayin Mo sa Sindak si Barbara. Susan Roces as Barbara gives a bravura performance, you just wish she dies instantly so that her agonies and pain will stop as Rosanna Ortiz continues to terrorize her but you wouldn't! Penned by Mike Relon Makiling, Ricardo Remias cinematography and Celso's direction made this film a memorable experience to watch if you are looking for good scare and eerie atmosphere. Ernani Cuenco's musical score has some annoying parts, but still haunts the whole movie. Max Jocson could have infuse more and toned down a bit. The scene where they were contacting the spirit of Rosanna Ortiz shot within the house with only a dim light on the background is enough to keep me awake, the piano sequence of Karen (Beth Manlongat) and the climactic showdown of Susan and Rosanna are one for the books. Castillo's visuals are one of a kind, the close up shots, camera's movements where it zooms in and out, the flying objects, the mirrors and of course the jolt are all unforgettable. We all need a good scare once in a while."

  1. Thanks for featuring pinoy horror films from the 70's. I saw PAGSAPIT NG DILIM, LANGIT LUPA AT IMPIYERNO on channel 13 back when Cinema One doesn't exist. PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA remains one of my personal favorite. KARUNUNGANG ITIM with the late Ramon Zamora is another worthy to revisit.

    Sorry.

But this is what I posted.

I've seen most of these films and what stood out for me was Lino Brocka's GUMISING KA, MARUJA.

This feature was indeed very scary (for an adolescent, anyway), excellent production value, extremely good acting, and the period piece in Flashbacks where Philip Salvador was rambling in Spanish which I understood being a Spanish-speaking child. The hate on his face and the familiarity of the Spanish language hit me straight in the heart and I left the theater with palpitations.

It would be nice to revisit this film and find for myself how it will affect me this time as a 47 year old tatang :)

Ah... the 70s Tagalog movies were priceless. Too bad they deteriorated after that decade.
