THE FIRST DARNA

The first Darna character Mars Ravelo
created in 1947 which he named Varga.

In July 1947, Komiks icon Mars Ravelo created a female Pinoy superhero which he named Varga which was serialized in Bulaklak magazine. Did you know that Varga was actually the first Darna? She also had an alter-ego named Narda.

Ravelo left Bulaklak and was hired by Ace Publications. He re-created Varga and renamed her Darna.
It appeared in Pilipino Komiks in 1950 which was illustrated superbly by Nestor Redondo. The first story of Darna tells of her battles against the Medusa-liked evil Valentina. It was so popular that it was adapted into movie in 1951, produced and directed by Fernando Poe Sr. and starred Rosa Del Rosario as Darna and Cristina Aragon as Valentina. A sequel, Darna at ang Babaing Lawin was made the following year.
