THE ART OF CARLOS 'BOTONG' FRANCISCO #1 OF 3: " SIETE INFANTES DE LARA"

A National Artist for Painting and 1964 Republic of the Philippines Cultural Heritage awardee, Carlos Villaluz Francisco or Botong to his friends, is considered the greatest muralist of the country. He was on the forefront of modernist art in the country, and with Victorio C. Edades and Galo B. Ocampo became part of “The Triumvirate” of modern art. (wikipedia)

Botong did several series of illustrations and drawings for This Week Magazine, a supplement of The Manila Chronicle. Best known for his historical epics, Botong's rendition of images came from mythology, history, legend customs and contemporary life.

THE 2008 METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL: "BALER" BEST PICTURE; CHRISTOPHER DE LEON & ANNE CURTIS, TOP AWARDEES (RE-POSTED)

‘Baler’ wins big in 2008 MMFF awards

MANILA, Philippines— A period film that depicts the last stand of Spanish forces amid the fall of colonization by the end of the 19th century bagged the most number of creative, acting and technical awards in the Metro Manila Film Festival awards night on Saturday.
Viva Films’ "Baler," which aims to retell a contentious event of the Philippine revolution that happened in the church of San Luis de Tolosa in Baler, Aurora from July 1998 to June 1899, won ten awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Anne Curtis, Best Director for Mark Meily, Best Screenplay for Roy Iglesias, Best Supporting Actor for Phillip Salvador, Best Cinematography for Lee Meily, Best Production Design for Aped Santos, Best Editing for Danny Anonuevo, the Gender-Sensitive Award and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.
Curtis won her first-ever acting award for her portrayal of Baler lass Feliza Reyes in love with a Spanish-Filipino trooper Celso Resurreccion (Jericho Rosales) in the historic siege.
"The fact that I was up against veteran actresses, who have won numerous awards in the past, made this trophy even more meaningful," Curtis said. She competed with veteran actresses Ai-Ai delas Alas ("Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat"), Maricel Laxa, Dawn Zulueta (both for "Magkaibigan"), among others, for the Best Actress title. "This is also for Echo (Rosales' nickname), who also worked really hard for this film. He's one of the best actors I know," Anne told the Philippine Daily Inquirer shortly after the awards ceremony held at the Sofitel Hotel in Pasay City.
Meily earned his second MMFF Best Director award after winning the same plum for “Crying Ladies” in 2003. His wife Lee also took home her first MMFF award. Christopher de Leon, meanwhile, received his eighth festival Best Actor award, the most by any artist in its 34-year history, for a role inspired by the late Rudy Fernandez in the Maverick Films drama “Magkaibigan” opposite last year’s awardee Jinggoy Estrada.
Comedian-TV host Manilyn Reynes pulled a surprise when she was named Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as a lesbian talent coordinator in Canary Films’ sex comedy “One Night Only,” which also won Best Original Story for its director Jose Javier Reyes. "She's a last minute replacement," said Reyes, who accepted the award in Manilyn's behalf. "I did not regret asking her to be a part of this film."
Newcomer Robert Villar, better known in the fantasy series “Dyesebel” as the mermaid’s trusted child friend “Buboy,” won Best Child Performer in Regal Films’ horror franchise “Shake, Rattle and Roll X.” Regal’s other festival entry, “Desperadas 2,” on the other hand, also won one award—Best Make-Up for Noli Villalobos.
The entry with the second most number of awards was the festival’s first-ever animated film, “Dayo Sa Mundo ng Elementalia,” which won four awards—Best Visual Effects (Robert Quilao), Best Musical Score (Jessie Lasaten), Best Theme Song (“Lipad” written by Jessie Lasaten and Artemio Abad Jr. and performed by Lea Salonga), and Best Sound (Albert Idioma and Wally Dellosa).
This year’s box office top grossers, Star Cinema’s “Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” and the OctoArts Films-M-Zet Productions-APT Entertainment collaboration “Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After” won second and third festival Best Picture awards respectively.
The 34th Metro Manila Film Festival runs from Dec. 25 to Jan. 7.

PACQUIAO IN A ONE-SIDED UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER MARGARITO

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS—Manny Pacquiao threw bombs that could have toppled a brick wall. Antonio Margarito absorbed most of them, but refused to fall.

In a masterful display of speed and precision, Pacquiao dominated the taller, bigger Margarito from the opening bell to earn a lopsided unanimous decision on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) for the World Boxing Council super welterweight
crown that further embellished his already sterling ring career.

Reasserting his dominance over Mexican fighters, the Filipino pound-for-pound king captured a record eighth title in as many divisions in his unprecedented march on history, a feat only Pacquiao himself could break if he decides to court danger again by moving to a higher weight class.
As Pacquiao bruised, bloodied and eventually disfigured the face of Margarito, he proved again that, at least so far, speed trumps size. Against his largest opponent yet, Pacquiao did what Pacquiao always does: He dipped and danced and fired southpaw, he ducked and spun and landed a tornado of combinations. When it ended, Pacquiao had earned his 13th straight victory and the WBC’s vacant 154-pound title.

With each round, Margarito’s face worsened, as if Pacquiao was painting a brutal boxing masterpiece.
It went like this: seventh round, left eye closed; eighth round, bleeding from nose; ninth round, left cheek bruised; 10th round, fight nearly stopped. In the 11th round, Pacquiao glanced at the referee, almost pleading for a stoppage. In the 12th round, he took mercy, punching rarely, virtually allowing Margarito to finish on his feet.

Pacquiao won every round on one scorecard, 120-108, and was ahead 119-109 and 118-110 on the other two. The Associated Press had it a 120-108 shutout.

JOHN LLOYD CRUZ AND BEA ALONZO: LOVE TEAM OF THE 2000s # 3

In 2002, John Lloyd Cruz starred in the primetime TV drama series Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay with Lorna Tolentino leading the cast. It was in this series that he was teamed up with budding young actress Bea Alonzo. At that time, Bea was only a newbie in the industry, having just started her career in K2BU. When the two appeared together, they clicked instantly. The following year, the two starred in their own TV series, It Might Be You. Their love team was launched on the big screen in 2003 via the Two Hearts episode of My First Romance. It was followed with another movie Now That I Have You in 2004. By then, it was proven that the John Lloyd-Bea love team was the one to watch. In 2005, they did another TV soap, Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin co-starring with Claudine Barretto and Diether Ocampo.

The year 2006 would seem like the year that changed Bea and John Lloyd. That year, they starred in their third movie, Close to You, alongside Sam Milby, their fourth, All About You and a top-rating TV series Maging Sino Ka Man, where the viewers were introduced to the famous love story of Eli and Jackie. When the series ended, their fans didn’t have to wait long as their fifth movie was released in 2007 entitled One More Chance. In 2008, they appeared in the Filipino remake of the telenovela I Love Betty La Fea. The two were reunited on screen in 2010, after three years, in a blockbuster hit, Miss You like Crazy.
