THE CONTROVERSIAL 'CARLO J. CAPARAS'

Carlo J. Caparas (b. 1948) is a Filipino writer-turned director and producer, who is best known for creating Filipino superheroes and comic book characters such as Panday, Bakekang, Totoy Bato, Joaquin Bordado, Kamagong, Angela Markado, Tasya Fantasya, Gagambino and Komiks serial novels as Pieta, Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, among others.

Two of Caparas novels that appeared in the late 70s and 80s. Both were serialized in Pilipino Komiks

Caparas first attempt at the writing field started during his days as a security guard. To while away lethargic moments, especially during the doldrums of the night shifts, Caparas decided to dabble on komiks illustrations that fit into scripted stories. Caparas derived this “hobby” from townmate and friend, illustrator Mar Santana – already an established name in the field at the time. With each stroke of the pen and brush, Caparas was faced with the inescapable decision of whether to stick to illustrations or else be a writer.
“I shall write!”was his final declaration.

One of his earlier and more memorable hits was the novel
Bakekang which was serialized in the Bondying Weekly Movie Specials of the Ace Publications. The novel ran for several years and was adapted for the silver screen. Nora Aunor played the title role in that film. Other famous Caparas hits were The Hero, Juan Tornado, Angela Markado, Totoy Bato, Ang Panday, Ermitanyo, Kung Tawagin Siya’y Bathala, Ang Huling Lalaki sa Baluarte, Somewhere, Pieta, Kahit Ako’y Lupa, Mong, Agatona, Harimanok, and Andres de Saya, to name only a few.

Many of Caparas’ novels have been turned into films. His novel, “Durugin si Totoy Bato”, did not only hit the chart as top-grosser at the box-office: it also won for Caparas the much-coveted FAMAS Award. The fantasy-adventure flick, “Ang Panday,” also a komiks serial, was an unprecedented topgrosser for three consecutive years (two were sequels) at the Metro Manila Film Festival. “Angela Markado”, a novel about a rape victim who sought justice and vindicated herself by killing her abusers one after the other, earned him international acclaim in a French Film Festival. THE BOX-OFFICE TANDEM OF JOEY DE LEON AND TONY REYES + RENE REQUIESTAS

"Long Ranger and Tonton" and "Batman en Robin," two of the many movies Joey de Leon and direk Tony Reyes collaborated, installing them the 1989 Box-office actor and director respectively ... spice it up with comic sensation Rene Requiestas--- Voila! A truly dynamite triumvirate!!!

Two heads are better than one--- but definitely! --- and no two people in local showbiz illustrates this better than the winning tandem of Joey de Leon and director Tony Reyes who were behind such giant hits as
She-Man, Starzan, Long Ranger and Tonton, Elvis and James and many more. How do Joey and Tony do it? “We discuss the project,” says Joey. “Actually, the project grows and grows as the discussion goes on. It grows some more as the shooting progresses. Ideas sometimes come in a snap and we incorporate them into the movie as shooting goes on
.”

Because they have been working together long enough for them to know each other well, Joey and Tony can openly give each other suggestions without worrying they might offend each other. “We do everything para gumanda ang pelikula,” says Tony. “Wala sa amin ang professional jealousy.

Together with Rene Requiestas, Joey and Tony, they are known as the Box-Office Triumvirate. Their movies click and easily catch on with moviegoers because they play characters familiar to the great majority (such as super-strongmen, sharpshooters who bungle up things, tribal creature, Pinoy cowboys, etc.). “Our main objective is simply to entertain,” says Joey. “We have no pretensions about being profound. That’s why we poke fun at commercials, we spoof Hollywood movies, TV shows and we recreate popular characters (Batman, etc.) in new settings. I have so many ideas that I hardly have time to put them down on paper.”

Joey and Tony don’t have to dig into books nor go far to gather ideas. “All you have to do is look around,” says Joey. “Ang dami-daming mapupulot na mga nakakatawa. All you have to do is open your eyes and your ears.
