MALANG AT WORK: A BRIEF SESSION WITH THE MASTER

At 81, Malang still paints, but rarely. We always prod him to paint and most of the time he declines and begs off. He feels he’s tired and burned out (I remember the late illustrator-writer Francisco Coching who retired early at age 55). But this is one exceptional instance that he obliges. He takes a brush, mixes and paints. Soler, brother-painter, and I just look and smile--- a brief memorable moment with the Master, our Dad.

Simon,
Good to see your Dad, still up and around. The last time I saw him was at an Angelito Antonio opening 10 years ago in Manila. I saw him also here in L.A. twice before that. How time flies. It's time he wins the National Artist award.

Malang is not yet a National Artist? I think it's a shame, when lesser talents have won the award. Tsk tsk.

Anyway, the post and pics are superb. Is that your brother Soler in the photo?

Maybe you can write a longer post about your Dad and your family.

Thanks Anna! Yes, that's my brother Soler in the photo.

Our dad (we call him 'Tatay') often jokes, in jest, about not being named National Artist, siguro, she says, "National Bookstore" Artist award na lang, since he spends most of his time browsing books at National Bookstore.(lol)
