GAWAD URIAN 1979: "JAGUAR" (BEST PICTURE)

"Jaguar" (1979)

Phillip Salvador in "Jaguar"

(L-R)- Charito Solis, Dindo Fernando, Amy Austria

1979: A Year of lnvectives:

The anniversary dinner of May 1979 saw the election of Doy del Mundo as Chairman and Mario Bautista as Secretary. No new members were taken in, and Cristina Pantoja- Hidalgo went on an extended leave. The year 1979 saw several attacks on the Manunuris. The first pointed out that less and less Manunuris were reviewing films, so that only the more active ones got the brunt of the industry’s attack, and people mistook their opinions as opinions of the group.

Most of the Manunuris pleaded guilty to this accusation, and an attempt was made to “force” Manunuris to write reviews or articles, for a column in a weekly magazine. The attempt eventually failed: first, because Manunuris had other full-time jobs and reviewed only on the side, so that as the economic situation tightened, most of them had to devote more time to “making ends meet.” Second, there were less and less movies worth reviewing, and it seemed redundant and useless to keep hammering on the same faults in formula films whose producers really couldn’t care less about quality. Thirdly, many of the newspaper outlets no longer welcomed negative reviews of the films, which they advertised in their movie-ad sections.

The most severe attack on the Manunuris, however, came at the 1979 Awards night when Lino Brocka ascended the stage not to receive the directorial award for Jaguar, but to reject it. Reading from a prepared speech, he accused the group of prejudice, saying that “under the guise of impartiality they practice their prejudices anyway.” It is more difficult, he said, to combat prejudice than corruption. You can fight money with more money, but how can you, he asked, fight prejudice? He then refused all further awards and nominations from the Manunuris.

The magazine and newspaper articles that came out on Lino Brocka’s rejection of the Urian Awards for the next so many months did the Manunuri a lot of good. First, it made the MPP realize that the attack was partly due to the fact that most Manunuris were no longer writing, so that the opinions of the few Manunuris were taken to be the group stand on films reviewed. Second, far from degrading the group, Lino Brocka made the Manunuri a household word. The reviewers and their awards became the common topic of the man on the street, the housewives, the market vendors. Those who had never heard of the Manunuri before became acquainted with it, and public awareness and interest grew, not only among teachers and students seriously concerned about the art of filmmaking, but among the so-called “bakya” crowd.

COMING SOON: THE MAIN EVENT

Lacson vs. Mancao

"MANCAO" IS BACK!

Cezar Mancao (center) is secured by NBI director Nestor Mantaring (left) and VACC chair Dante Jimenez upon arrival at NAIA. (Inquirer photo)

Former Police senior superintendent Cezar Mancao was chief of the Presidential Anti-Organized Task Force (PAOCTF) for Luzon at the time of the abduction and murder of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and driver Emmanuel Corbito. Dacer and Corbito were killed and their bodies were burned on the evening of November 24, 2000 in a creek near Barangay Buna Lejos in Indang, Cavite. Then PNP chief and now Senator Panfilo Lacson headed PAOCTF.
Mancao fled the country in 2001 after he was also implicated in the bloody May 1, 2001 siege and has since been reportedly seen in different locations abroad

Mancao is now back, arriving last Thursday, June 4, after 8 years in hiding, following the Philippines’ extradition request. He is set to testify against Lacson. Lacson has denied the accusation.

I hope something positive will come out from his testimony. His disclosure may unlock some of the mysteries surrounding the 8-year old double murder. It’s about time that justice is served and the perpetrators punished.

In 1994, a movie was made based on the life of Mancao (played by Phillip Salvador) as the intrepid law enforcement officer. He was best remembered as the man responsible for the dismantling of the notorious Red Scorpion Group and the killing of its head, Joey de Leon.

"AFUANG: BOUNTY HUNTER"

Inquirer photo

Last Thursday’s Senate inquiry on the sex video scandal involving cosmetic surgeon Hayden Kho and sexy actress Katrina Halili turned into a circus. A man poured bottled water on Kho, who remained unbothered and unaffected in his seat. The man was ordered arrested and detained. The man turned out to be Abner Afuang, an ex-police officer and former Pagsanjan, Laguna mayor. Afuang, who caused a scene when he burned the Singaporean flag at the height of rallies to save convicted Filipino Flor Contemplacion from hanging in Singapore in 1995, was not apolegetic. He added that while he had no intention to show disrespect to the Senate, he felt a surge of emotion when he took his seat at the Senate hearing. But he said that when a waiter brought him a bottle of water, “nagdilim ang paningin ko, galit ako sa mga walanghiya [everything went dark for me, I really hate jerks)."He also said he was mad at Kho because his only daughter, who he said is a nursing student in the United States, looked like Halili.

Did you know that a movie was made in 1988 based on his life as a policeman? The movie, aptly titled “Afuang: Bounty Hunter,” starred Phillip Salvador, who happened to be in the Senate floor when the incident took place.

Phillip Salvador's first big and challenging role
Jaguar (1979)- Stars Phillip Salvador and Amy Austria/

Directed by Lino Brocka

Phillip Salvador started his movie career under the wing of FPJ Productions doing minor and supporting roles in the 70s in such films like Bato sa Buhangin, Anino ng Araw, among others. He was rediscovered by Director Lino Brocka while walking proud and tall in a studio where the great director was attending to some important matters. Brocka knew he had with him a potential star material. This was in late 70s. The rest is what they call history.

Brocka directed Ipe (Phillip’s nickname) in such classics as Jaguar (the first film to compete in Cannes), Cain at Abel (where he won the first FAP Best Actor award), Mananayaw (inspired by the true story of two lovers who danced professionally), Bona, Rubia Servios, Adultery, Kapit sa Patalim, Orapronobis.
