MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: ELY RAMOS, NORMA BLANCAFLOR, PUGO & TOGO, WITH FLORENTINO BALLECER, EXEQUIEL SEGOVIA, PATRING CARVAJAL, ROSARIO LAM IN "BINIBINI NG PALENGKE" (1941)/ UPDATED

Romance, music and comedy cleverly join forces and make a hundred per cent go of it in the new Carlos Vander Tolosa production for Filippine Films, "Binibini N g Palengke," which starts its first-run exhibition at the Dalisay theatre today.

Featuring Ely Ramos and Norma Blancaflor in their biggest co-starring triumph, this excellent movie opus is everything sure to give the cine public here, there and everywhere a full load of wholesome entertainment. What with its powerful dramatic set-to, its goodly sprinkling of comedy with Togo and Pugo, side-busting laugh-team, dishing out fun as you like it and finally its fine song flavoring — all these plus its smooth dialogue, steady continuity, expert camerawork and careful editing, put "Binibini Ng Palengke" in a class all its own. Surely, a high one at that.

Ely Ramos impressively plays the role of a rich man's son who goes gaga about an attractive small-town market vendor. Norma Blancaflor, doing the part of the eye-filling market beauty, is amusingly realistic. Interesting is the word for the main complication in the plot wherein Ely Ramos, set to love but not to lose, disguises himself as a lowly farmer's son and makes love to Norma. It's quite the way of country ladies to prefer suitors of their own kind and co-authors C. V. Tolosa and Narciso Asistio did "punish" Ely Ramos who all his life never had a taste of farm life but who nevertheless honest-to-goodness complied with all the callings of his role.

If you're not hep to romance and drama and music, well, you can't miss Togo and Pugo, comedy maniacs who've brought many a house down with their laugh sounders. They're cast as Ely Ramos' loose-brained stooges — a couple of idiots all right — who do a lot of monkey business at your funny bone's expense. Laugh all you may but don't let it be from ear to ear.

“Binibini Ng Palengke" is a remarkable celluloid stuff, and ithen all is seen and heard, surely you'd want to pat on the back Carlos Vander Tolosa, Ely Ramos, Norma Blancaflor, Togo and Pugo and the rest in the cast or if you're not the complimenting kind, you'll keep your seat for a second sitting or a third. Whatever you choose to do, don't say we didn't tip you.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: LIRIO LERMA, JAIME DE LA ROSA, PACITA DEL RIO, WITH NATY BERNARDO, PAQUITO DEL ROSARIO, PATRICIA MIJARES, TONY ARNALDO, PEDRO CRUZ, JOSE CRIS SOTO IN "IBONG SAWI" (1941)/ UPDATED

Treated with the same surpassing directorial ingenuity characteristic of "Pakiusap," "Ikaw Rin" and other Octavio Silos successes, "Ibong Sawi," Excelsior's latest production as well as Director Octavio Silos' first vehicle for 1941, starring Lirio Lerma, Jaime de la Rosa and Pacita del Rio, opens today at the Dalisay theatre on its first-run schedule in Manila.

Positively the best work of Director Silos to date, "Ibong Sawi"— based on one of the best-read novels by Susana de Guzman — is easily conceded to fulfill the cine-goers' idea of a well proportioned screen play. Featured in the stellar cast are Lirio Lerma, formerly known to cine and radio fans as Lirio Lakindanum, Jaime de la Rosa, brother of Rogelio de la Rosa, and Pacita del Rio, smooth-going movie personality, well-known for her fluent "other woman" characterizations. A capable supporting cast composed of old time players and new talents are also featured— they are, Naty Bernardo, Raquito "Bolero" del Rosario, Patricia Mijares, Tony Arnaldo, Pedro "Tembong" Cruz and Jose Cris Soto.

The story of "Ibong Sawi" is sure fire in its dramatic embodiments, amusing in its comedy flavorings and heartwarming in its highly melodramatic conclusion. It is about a country physician and a charming young woman who love enduringly in spite of a powerful barrier in the person of the physician's legal wife. The story presents in a comprehensively detailed manner the manner the struggle between two conflicting forces — the doctor on one side and his wife on the other — trying to outdo each other, the former to justify his right to love and happiness and the latter to give vent to her frivolous nature. How the physician's Illicit love-affair triumphs and what happens to his wile is the principal intrigue in the plot.

Lirio Lerma and Jaime de la Rosa are perfectly convincing as the illicit lovers. Pacita de Rio as the physician's legal wife is fluent. Among the supporting players, Naty Bernardo, Tony Arnaldo and PatriciaMijares deserve mention for their fine performances.

"Ibong Sawi" features Prof. J. Buencamino’s composition of the same name as its theme song. The musical numbers were handled by Prof. Constancio de Guzman. Comedy mix-ups featuring Pedro ‘Tembong’ Cruz and Jose Cris Soto and beautiful dance interludes, including the popular "Quezon Walk," arc among the higllights of this latest Excelsior production.

MORE ON PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIES: CARMEN ROSALES, JOSE PADILLA, JR., WITH PACITA DEL RIO, GREGORIO FERNANDEZ, PRECIOSO PALMA, JUSTINA DAVID, ENGRACIO IBARRA< DOMINGO SANTOS, TOMASA ALVAREZ, ROSARIO LAM IN "CARMEN" (1941)/ UPDATED

Inaugurating the new Dalisay theatre is Sampaguita's first musical production for 1941, "Carmen, which brings to the screen, after almost three years, the unforgettable love-team of
"Arimunding Munding," Carmen Rosales and Jose Padilla, Jr., and which starts showing to the eagerly waiting public today. Directed by Gregorio Fernandez, who made such 1940 hits as "Senorita," "Katarungan" and "Colegiala," and written by that versatile vernacular woman writer, Susana de Guzman, who was responsible for the highly exhilarating story of "Arimunding-Munding," "Carmen" will, undoubtedly, sweep commendations from film critics and go into the annals of motion picture history as one of the New Year's best celluloid products with the most sprightly, heart-balming tale of romance.

Briefly, the story concerns the all-consuming fire of love at first sight. A beautiful Carmen meets a handsome Jose on board a ship going down south to Cebu. In that meeting, a love for each other is born, they being unaware that that love will only be suppressed upon reaching their destination.  For Carmen and Jose are both ignorant of the fact that they are rushing to Cebu to see an eccentric old woman breathe her last and to inherit from her a fortune of P50,000 each. This eccentric old woman is Carmen's aunt, who in her youth loved immensely Jose's father. Because of this love, she bequeaths to the son of the man she loves a part of her wealth. However, the last will of the dying woman stipulates that, before Carmen and Jose will come to possess the money, they must neither fall in love with each pther nor bind themselves together with the holy bonds of matrimony. But, Carmen and Jose have already fallen in love with each other before they come to know of the wishes of the dying woman. And this complicates matter because Carmen and Jose can neither afford to lose the money they will inherit nor their love for each other. How they are able to extricate themselves from the difficult problem of either choosing money or love gives the picture a thrill-packed climax.

Aside from Carmen Rosales and Jose Padilla,Jr., many prominent film players are featured in the supporting cast
--- Pacita del Rio, most vixenish actress of the local screen, is making her debut with Sampaguita in this picture. She provides the womanly intrigue to the film and plays her role with finesse. Others in the supporting cast are Gregorio Fernandez, Precioso Palma, Justina David, Engracio Ibarra, Domingo Santos, Tomasa Alvarez and Rosario Lam.

Popular tunes which are composed by popular song-writer, Constancio de Guzman, abound in the picture, and are destined to be the hit tunes of the season. The beautiful scenes of "Carmen" were photographed by the skillful cameraman, Higino J. Fallorina, who, it must be recalled, was also responsible for the excellent photography of "Arimunding Munding,” the first picture co-starring Carmen Rosales and Jose Padilla, Jr.

If you want high-class entertainment, if you want a picture that has all the ingredients for arousing your every emotion, if you want to have more than two hours of thrilling screen experience, then see "Carmen"at the  new Dalisay theatre, opening today.
