SEVERINO REYES' "WALANG SUGAT" (1939) and (1957): MOVIE ADAPTATION

Regarded as Severino Reyes' masterpiece, Walang Sugat broadly underscores the injustice of Spanish rule even as it dances around the cruel fate of the young lovers Tenyong and Julia with humor and song. Set in the final leg of the Philippine Revolution, Tenyong is forced to leave behind his childhood sweetheart Julia to join the Katipunan. Meanwhile, Julia's mother pressures her into marrying the wealthy Miguel instead. With no word from Tenyong as the battle prolongs, Julia gives in, but her wedding is interrupted by the fatally wounded Tenyong, who returns with a dying wish. (Internet Source)

TWO "PALITO" MOVIES ON ORIGINAL DVD

Two Palito movies came out in the market recently, "Walang Matigas na Buto sa Gutom na Aso" and "Kumander Ahmed Kalansalay." The late Palito, a well-loved comedian known for his sunken hollow eyes and thin-reed body, appeared in many Philippine films mostly in supporting roles. His career came to peak during the 80's when he starred in several comedy movies parodying American action films, such as Rambuto, a Rambo spoof, the title being a pun of the Tagalog word 'buto' which means 'bone', again to capitalize on his being 'thin-boned', and a James Bond spoof, James Bone where he plays an emaciated version of the secret agent.

"DESTINATION: VIETNAM" (1968): THE FIRST FILIPINO FILM IN CINEMASCOPE

Poor Philippines, local cinema tasted its first Filipino film in CinemaScope only in 1968, when CinemaScope was in a decline.

CinemaScope, a widescreen movie format, was used from 1953 to 1967. Anamorphic lenses allowed the process to project film up to a 2.66:1 aspect ratio, twice as wide as the conventional format of 1.33:1. Although CinemaScope was shortly made obsolete by new technological developments, the anamorphic presentation of films initiated by CinemaScope in the 1950s has continued to this day.

The Robe, the first movie filmed in wide-screen CinemaScope, had its world premiere at the Roxy Theater in New York City on September 16, 1953.

"Destination: Vietnam" (1968)- Stars Amalia Fuentes, Leopoldo Slacedo, Kieu Chinh, Vic Vargas, Helen Thompson, Vic Silayan, Bert Olivar/ Directed by Lamberto Avellana
