In 1959, Sampaguita Pictures released "Pitong Pagsisisi," as part of their Lenten offering. Dubbed as "the biggest array of stars in the greatest motion picture of all time!" Surely' it's one of the biggest in the history of Philippine movies--- Look at the stars--- Carmen Rosales, Gloria Romero, Paraluman, Rita Gomez, Ric Rodrigo, Lolita Rodriguez, Luis Gonzales, Van de Leon, Amalia Fuentes, Juancho Gutierrez, Susan Roces, Romeo Vasquez, Barbara Perez, Marlene Dauden, Carlos Salazar, Tony Marzan, Tony Cayado, Eddie Garcia, Liberty Ilagan, Eddie Gutierrez...
The movie was based on the story by Ben Gallardo and was serialized on the pages of "Bulaklak' and "Alimyon" magazines.

At last, Manuel Urbano, popularly known as Manuel Conde was proclaimed National Artist, a well-deserved and long overdue recognition on the prized icon of Philippine Cinema. I don't know about the other awardees, particularly Carlo Caparas for Visual Arts (???) and Film (???).
Manuel Conde was known for his Juan Tamad series. Did you know that sometime in 1961, he was supposed to do "Juan Tamad Goes to Malacañang" or "His Excellency Juan Tamad"? It would have been a wonderful sequel to "Juan Tamad Goes to Congress." But for unknown reason, the said movie project didn''t push thru. Here's the ads of the aborted project.
One of Condes's last movies was a Niño Muhlach starrer, "Juan Tamad Junior," released in 1980.

Big stars in Philippine cinema appeared in two great movies produced and released by Sampaguita Pictures. The movies, "Kamandag" (1959) and "Berdugo" (1960) had incredible cast headlined by Fred Montilla, Rita Gomez, Paraluman, Eddie Garcia, Van de Leon, Jose Padilla, Jr., Daisy Romualdez, Tony Marzan, Rosa Mia and Marlene Dauden, all respectable names in the movie industry.I wonder if both films are still available in the archives of Sampaguita.

Ronnie Ricketts, a ramp model, entered the movie scene in the early 80s at the time when his girlfriend then was Maricel Soriano, who at that early stage was starting to blossom into a fine versatile actress. Ronnie was being built as the other love interest of Maricel, even doing a movie, I Love You, I Hate You, together with her and perennial partner Wiliam Martinez. The movie, which was being billed as "Today's most popular love team in the most controversial reel and real-life romantic triangle," was to stir up the purportedly love triangle of Maricel-William-Ronnie. However, such gimmick didn't click among fans and the moviegoing public.

Right- John & marsha '86 (1986)- Stars Dolphy, Nida Blanca, maricel Soriano, Ronnie Ricketts, Rolly Quizon, Dely Atay-Atayan, Matutina, Madel de Leon and Panchito/ Directed by Apollo Arellano
For a time, Ronnie’s career was in limbo.
With his muscular built and physique, he went into a massive martial arts training and body-building. He reinvented himself and resurfaced in the latter part of the 80s as a young action star. Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla, Jr. offered him a good role in Imus Productions’ Sparrow Unit, which propelled his career and eventually earned him the first FAMAS Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1987. He then appeared in a string of action movies--- Target Maganto, Alex Boncayao Brigade, Gapos Gang, among others. Slowly but surely, he made a name for himself. He was also nominated twice in the FAMAS Best Actor award in 1990 for Tatak ng isang Api and 1991 for Isa-isahin ko Kayo. He also produce and direct (as Ronn-Rick) as well as star in his own movies.
I remember him best in Chito S. Rono's Ikaw Lang (1993)with Vilma Santos and Ilaban Mo, Bayan Ko!: The Obet Pagdanganan Story (1997) with the late senator Raul S. Roco in a very special role as Ninoy Aquino.

Did you know that in 1999, actor-comedian Willie Revillame appeared in a movie in a solo lead role? The movie was Alyas Boy Tigas: Ang Probinsyanong Wais. "Talagang astig at wais"--- Where is he now, after 10 years?

One of the beautiful faces to grace Philippine cinema is Hilda Koronel. I remember her and she was great in Lino Brocka’s “Insiang” and Mike de leon’s “Kung Magarap Ka’t Magising.” She has the rare combination of beauty, brain and talent that set her apart from other stars of her time.
Hilda (b. January 17, 1957), Susan Reid Moore in real life, was only 12 when she was introduced in 1969 in the movie “Leslie.” In 1970, she was launched to full stardom in “Haydee.” As a contract star of LEA Productions, she appeared in countless memorable movies. Despite her young age, she was cast in lead, young-adult roles in romantic dramas, among them, “Santiago” with FPJ, “Cadena de Amor,” “Now,” “Stardoom” and “Tubog sa Ginto.” She received her first FAMAS award for Best Supporting Actress in “Santiago,” the youngest to receive at 13.
Leslie (1969)- Stars Dante Rivero, Boots Anson-Roa and Liza Lorena/ with Chichay, Caridad Sanchez, Mary Walter/ Introducing Hilda Koronel/ Directed by Armando de Guzman
A TV drama anthology titled “Hilda” was launched in 1971, a corroborative effort of Director Lino Brocka and LEA Productions. It was conceived to build up and hone the natural talent of LEA’s prized contract star, Hilda, who had then just turned 14. The show turned out to be a big money earner for the station (KBS-Channel 9) and would last for nearly 5 years. “Lino taught me everything about acting, how to be and look seductive, through mere eye movement,” Hilda confided.(From the book: Lino Brocka/His Life and Times/ 1993)
As soon as her contract with LEA expired, Hilda’s career went to a more brighter paths and greater heights and with Brocka as her mentor and in her side, they would teamed up with some important movie projects that would eventually become classic masterpieces, movies like "Tinimbang Ka Nguni't Kulang," "Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag," "Insiang," "Angela Markado," "PX."

Anybody remember 'Twist' cigarettes? It was the "smoking craze," as the ad says, in 1962, when the 'twist' was the popular dance craze that time. The dancing duo in the ad layout were Susan Roces and Eddie Gutierrez, from their hit movie, "Susanang Twist."
An email from a friend, Rod (Samonte): Simon,I like those ADS you've been posting. Here's another contribution. Painter and National Artist Cesar Legaspi is shown here advertising Vick's Impact. Of course Legaspi was then the art director for an advertising agency (forgot the name), but he probably posed for the ad instead of getting a professional model. (see attached) Rod

Eddie Garcia is a respected and multi-awarded actor and director. A versatile performer, he can play both lead or contravida roles. In the many movies he made, one character that always stuck on one’s mind--- a mischievous fellow named 'Manuel Dakutin' or ‘Manoy.” He is fun and joy to watch in the many sex-comedy movies he appeared onscreen.

Carina Afable is a popular Filipina singer and a famous TV personality in the 60s and 70s. One of her top-rating TV show then was “May I Sing To You,” a weekly musical show aired at Channel 5. She was also one of the mainstays in another popular daily noontime show “Stop, Look and Listen.”
Carina married and left for the US where she continued her singing career. In 1982, towards the end of the series Barney Miller, Carina made an appearance as the Filipino mail-order bride of one of the characters, Inspector Luger. She appeared in 3 episodes of the series. (wikipedia) She is still active singing in the States, still looking young and bubbly. (see You Tube uploads)
She is the aunt of current popular TV host and actor, Ryan Agoncillo.
Definitely, the longest-running TV game show, Kuarta O Kahon was aired from the 60s to 90s.
Before "Eat Bulaga's" Laban O Bawi or "Wowowee's" Pera O Bayong, there was "Kuarta O Kahon." It was "the game show" for 38 years, starting in 1962.
The man behind it is Mr. Entertainment himself, Pepe Pimentel.
On the landmark "Kuarta o Kahon," he says "It was copied from "Bidding The Box," an American TV show during the 50s. It was originally titled "Mahiwagang Kahon," a prime-time radio show hosted by Jaime dela Rosa and produced by Alto Broadcasting System, which was owned by Antonio Quirino. When CBN bought ABS, they got me to handle the show as host and producer. It was basically a quiz show, where all the participants were professional contestants, meaning they were the same winners in all the other quiz shows. So, after almost two years, the show was cancelled.
"But I believe in it," he says. "No one owned its format, so I decided to produce it myself for KBS in 1962 as "Kuarta O Kahon." I transformed it into a family show, where participants would come from all over the nation. I invited them by mail. Plus, I made sure that the contestants were genuine, and the winners would get their exact prizes."

"Gorio and his Jeepney," was one of Chiquito's early TV shows. It was aired in 1966 at ABC-Channel 5. The popular daily cartoon strip by Ben Alcantara was also made into a movie in 1962.
Lights! Camera! Action!--- The scene--- Six men armed with pistols barged into the house of actor Sonny Parsons in suburban Marikina city as the maid opened the gate. The intruders then tied everyone up. One of them poked a gun on Parsons’ head but it did not go off. The men took the money, jewelry, cellular phones and a video camera. They then entered the girl’s bedroom, tied them up and started undressing them. Parsons tricked the intruders into believing a police patrol would be having breakfast at his house, prompting the gunmen to panic and leave. The maid then untied herself and that of Parsons. Parsons then retrieved his .45-caliber pistol and chased the gunmen, who were boarding a passenger jeepney, a public transit vehicle they commandeered. A shootout occurred and the actor killed the two men. This exciting scene was not a part of a movie Parsons was shooting, but an action-filled true-to-life real drama that took place in 2002.

Sonny Parsons, a sharpshooter and a responsible gun owner, was once a member of the popular all-male singing group called the "Hagibis." He decided to turn solo and tried acting. He appeared in many action movies in the late 80s and early 90s. He also entered politics--- elected as a councilor in Marikina. He ran for Mayor but lost. He regularly practices and a habitual visitor in shooting ranges.

In 1978, labor groups were asking for a 18 pesos a day minimum wage. The government was adamant and said NO to the demands. Well, that's only 540 pesos a month. Not enough to buy a sack of rice in today's prices.
In 1982, thirteen-year old Julie Vega, best remembered for her role in Mga Mata ni Angelita (1978), appeared in Milagro sa Porta Vaga, a true-to-life story of the miraculous Virgin of Our Lady of Solitude of Cavite City.
Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga, also called "Reina de Cavite" and "La Virgen de la Soledad", is the patroness of CaviteCity. The Blessed Virgin Mary is depicted as Our Lady of Sorrows. Mary, garbed in black and white attire, seems to be on her knees as she contemplates the Passion of Her Son, Jesus. Before her are the crown of thorns and the nails, the instrument of Christ's Crucifixion.(wikipedia)
At 81, Malang still paints, but rarely. We always prod him to paint and most of the time he declines and begs off. He feels he’s tired and burned out (I remember the late illustrator-writer Francisco Coching who retired early at age 55). But this is one exceptional instance that he obliges. He takes a brush, mixes and paints. Soler, brother-painter, and I just look and smile--- a brief memorable moment with the Master, our Dad.
Did you know that 60s action star Tony Ferrer, popularly known as Tony Falcon, Agent X-44, shared top billings with Hollywood star Christopher Lee? In 1967, Ferrer appeared as Inspector Ramos, not X-44, with Lee in "Vengeance of Fu Manchu," one of the several movies Lee did, as Fu Manchu. Tony's name was even ahead of Lee in the movie's local movie ad layout.
In the July 5, 2009 issue of the Sunday Inquirer Magazine, a supplement of the the Philippines Daily Inquirer, two film sites, Video 48 and Andrew Leavold: The Search For Weng Weng were mentioned in the article, "Pinoy Cult Films: The Cinema That Wouldn't Die" by Eric S. Caruncho. (Thanks Eric for the write-up)
Part of the article...
Thanks to the Internet and the efforts of obsessive fanboys and girls – many of them outside the Philippines – these films are beginning to get some kind of recognition (“respect” may be too strong a word).
Quentin Tarantino, for one, has openly acknowledged his cinematic debt to a number of Pinoy exploitation movies even as he combines grindhouse aesthetics with A-list Hollywood production values.
A recent international film festival actually held a screening of the camp midnight movie classic “TemptationIsland,” perhaps a signal of wider acceptance of Pinoy cult cinema.
It is on the worldwide web, however, where these movies continue to live a preternatural half-life, as downloadable torrents, or legal online DVD purchases, and enshrined as the content of lovingly constructed websites and blogs, ripe for rediscovery.
• A good place to start is http://andrewleavold.blogspot. com/, a weblog maintained by Australian Andrew Leavold, who runs a video rental place in Brisbane where one can presumably find many of these films, and who actually made a documentary titled “The Search for Weng Weng.” The film follows him as he retraces the tiny footsteps of the “For Y’ur Height Only” star from his birthplace in Baclaran to his final resting place at the Pasay cemetery. Leavold’s blog contains a wealth of information on Tagalog movies, including extensive filmographies of Dolphy, Fernando Poe, Tony Ferrer, Roberto Gonzales, Ramon Zamora and others, as well as a mouth-watering archive of cult Tagalog movies. Leavold’s obsessive attention to the minutiae of even the most obscure films should put us natives to shame. • Thankfully, we have a local counterpart in http://video48.blogspot.com/. Maintained by one Simon Santos, the site offers a somewhat more balanced view of Philippine cinema, including as it does more mainstream films and fewer of the more extreme type (although it has its share of Pinoy movie arcana, offering for instance, proof of the existence of a 1987 bold film actually titled “Diligin ng Suka ang Uhaw na Lumpia”). In the 70s, Hollywood actress Angie Dickinson starred in a weekly detective series Police Woman, one of my favorite TV shows then. She played the role of Sgt. Leann "Pepper" Anderson, an officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal Conspiracy Unit. The show became an instant hit.
Probably, the local counterpart was a certain “Emma Henry,” not a movie star, but a real police woman. Henry was a distinguished Filipino police officer who appeared in two film biopics with her as a star. Her credentials--- She was an expert in judo and karate, being an Asian Judo-Karate champion and undefeated for 7 years; sharpshooter; the most decorated policewoman in the Far East; a radio announcer, writer and a linguist; a martial arts degree holder (obtained from Japan-7th dan blackbelter); awarded the TOPP (Ten Outstanmding Policemen of the Philippines); a lieutenant of the Los Banos Police Force having promoted twice in a row andeventually became the first woman to be assigned as a police station commander.
Henry gained further fame after she agreed to play herself in a biopic on her life produced by Kinavesa Productions. Released in 1978, Emma Henry (Policewoman) showcased Henry's martial arts skills and was a success. A sequel, Ang Pagbabalik ni Emma Henry ("The Return of Emma Henry"), followed three years later. Henry starred in another film, Lady Cop.

Right- Ang Pagbabalik ni Emma Henry (1981)- Stars Emma Henry in the title role and cast of 24 big guest superstars/ Directed by Armando Ruiz David
Despite her modest film career, Henry never gave up her day job as a police officer. In 1986, she was shot dead while in the line of duty. At the time of her death, it was widely suspected that she had been assassinated by members of the New People's Army, which was then waging a high-profile campaign to liquidate well-known police officials.(wikipedia)

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is featured in the latest issue of The Ring magazine. Known as the "bible of boxing," The Ring has him the cover in the July issue and a 7-page article devoted to the prized pound-for-pound fighter.
“Can Voltes V defend the earth against the Boazan empire invasion?” says a 1978 newspaper ad announcing the TV debut of the popular Japanese animated cartoon series, “Voltes 5.” It made its first TV appearance and Premiere telecast on May 5, 1978 on Channel 7 and created a major impact among the Filipino televiewers especially the children. Every Friday night at 6 pm, Filipinos were glued to their seats watching each episode and were thrilled when the heroes headed by Steve Armstrong (Kenichi Gou in Japan) started to volt in to become Voltes V. It eventually became a household favorite and soon the talk of the town. It was such a phenomenon then. Just when the people were enjoying and following every episode of the series, came the fatal blow. Then President Ferdinand Marcos issued a directive banning Voltes V citing excessive violence as the main reason. Many believed that the basis behind the cancellation was the story’s content which can be compared to the Marcos regime. It’s a big blow for all the growing kids who followed the show unfailingly. I’m sure most of these kids up to this time, as an adult, hated Marcos for doing it--- a good example of dictatorship. Voltes V made a great comeback and was re-aired in the 1990s. The Voltes V craze was relived and rekindled. And it’s bigger than ever!!!
This is an original 70s Voltes V die-cast robot toy posted at ebay selling at a staggering php 35,900. It originally sells for php 500 to php 1,000 in 1978, a hefty amount that time. It became a sought-after piece and collector’s item when the Voltes V TV series was re-released in the 90s.
Pirated dvds and cds, such as shown on the right image above, are selling fast since the death of Pop King Michael Jackson.
In 1996, the 37-year old “King of Pop” Michael Jackson made his second Manila appearance with a two-day concert as part of the pop icon’s History World Tour. The concerts were held on December 8 and 10 at AsiaworldCity, Aguinaldo Blvd., Paranaque. In between, Jackson visited the pediatric ward of the ParanaqueCommunityHospital where he kissed and hugged several babies and brought cheers to thousands of fans that packed the grounds of the hospital.
Michael Jackson, only 17, first performed in Manila in 1976 together with his brothers, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Randy (the youngest at 14 who replaced the ailing Germaine). The quintet popularly known as the “Jackson Five,” did a series of concerts--- at the Folk Arts Theater, February 13, 14 and 15 and at the Araneta Coliseum, February 17, 18 and 19, 1976.
No one can do it literally, of course. What one often does is to simply relive, or try to remember the past, the good old happy days, the years gone by. Some do it by reading old letters, some by looking at old albums and photographs. Some reminisce to talking to old friends. Well, others simply watch good old movies.
